var

Where

Level 1

Use var to ask 'where?'

How It Works

In Swedish, when you want to ask about the location of a person, place, or thing, you use the question word var. It's the direct equivalent of the English 'where'.

The most common sentence structure for questions with var is:
Var + Verb + Subject ...?

This structure follows the fundamental verb-second rule in Swedish, where one initial constituent precedes the finite verb in this ordinary direct wh-question pattern. Other main-clause types have different orders. In this case, var is the first element, and the verb is the second.

For example:

  • Var är nycklarna? (Where are the keys?)
  • Var bor du? (Where do you live?)

Note: Be careful not to confuse var (static location) with vart (movement to a location). Var asks 'where at?', while vart asks 'where to?'.

Activity Location Versus Destination
Var går du? can ask where you walk, for example in which park or along which path. Vart går du? asks where you are heading. The presence of går therefore does not automatically require vart.

In the ordinary written distinction, ask Var är nyckeln? for location and Vart åker du? for destination. Regional speech often uses the same form for both, including vart in many areas and vars in parts of northern Sweden. Recognize those varieties while learning the written var/vart distinction.

Examples (5)

  1. Var är du?

    Where are you?

Word by Word: Where are you?

  2. Var bor han?

    Where does he live?

Word by Word: Where lives he?

  3. Var ligger stationen?

    Where is the station located?

Word by Word: Where lies the station?

  4. Var jobbar din syster?

    Where does your sister work?

Word by Word: Where works your sister?

  5. Jag vet inte var de är.

I don't know where they are.

Word by Word: I do not know where they are.

The embedded question has var + subject de + finite är, unlike direct Var är de? With a sentence adverb, use var de inte är.
