Were (Subjunctive)

Level 3

Vore can mean were in a hypothetical condition or would be in a hypothetical result. It is a special form of vara; var also occurs in many hypothetical contexts.

How It Works

'Vore' is a special form of the verb 'vara' (to be) that belongs to the subjunctive mood. This form helps present a situation as hypothetical, unlikely or unreal, and can also soften a proposal without asserting that it is impossible.

Key Uses of 'Vore':
1. In Conditional Clauses: It occurs in if-clauses that describe an unreal or hypothetical condition.

  • Compare:
  • Past tense (fact): När jag var i Stockholm... (When I was in Stockholm...)
  • Subjunctive (hypothetical): Om jag vore i Stockholm... (If I were in Stockholm...)

2. Expressing Wishes: It can be used to express a wish or a desirable hypothetical situation, often translating to 'would be'.

  • Det vore kul att resa dit. (It would be fun to travel there.)

'Vore' vs. 'Skulle vara'
'Vore' is often interchangeable with skulle vara (would be). 'Vore' can sound slightly more formal, literary, or concise.

  • Det vore bra. = Det skulle vara bra. (That would be good.)
  • In an ordinary hypothetical condition, Om jag vore rik or Om jag var rik is a useful basic pattern. Om jag skulle vara rik can give a different hypothetical nuance; skulle is not a mechanical replacement in every if-clause, and usage also varies regionally.

In modern Swedish, especially in spoken language, 'skulle vara' is very common, but 'vore' is still widely used and essential for a complete understanding of the language.

Examples (5)

  1. Om jag vore du, skulle jag tacka ja.

If I were you, I would say yes.

Word by Word: If I were you, would-I say yes (inverted word order).

  2. Det vore trevligt med en kopp kaffe.

A cup of coffee would be nice.

Word by Word: It were nice with a cup coffee.

Vore presents the coffee as a pleasant possibility and can soften a suggestion. Skulle vara can also be polite; vore is not automatically the politer choice.

  3. Om det inte vore så kallt, skulle vi gå ut.

If it weren't so cold, we would go out.

Word by Word: If it not were so cold, would-we go out (inverted word order).

  4. Utan din hjälp vore jag förlorad.

Without your help, I would be lost.

Word by Word: Without your help were I lost.

This shows 'vore' in a main clause expressing a hypothetical outcome, equivalent to '...I would be lost'.

  5. Det vore en dröm att bo i Italien.

It would be a dream to live in Italy.

Word by Word: It were a dream to live in Italy.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the subjunctive 'vore' for a real past event instead of 'var'.

När jag vore ung spelade jag fotboll.
När jag var ung spelade jag fotboll.

'Vore' is only for hypothetical or unreal situations. For something that actually happened, use the past tense 'var'. In hypothetical 'if'-clauses, both 'var' and 'vore' are fine, with 'vore' sounding a little more formal.

  • Using 'skulle' (would) by itself when 'vore' (would be) is needed.

Det skulle trevligt med en fika.
Det vore trevligt med en fika.

In this adjective pattern, skulle needs vara: Det skulle vara trevligt. Vore can express the same result more briefly. Skulle can stand without an expressed following verb in other contexts when material is recoverable; the shown adjective construction does not license that omission.
