Verb gapping in coordination

Level 5

Gapping is a type of ellipsis where a verb that is repeated in a coordinated clause is omitted to make the sentence more concise and fluent.

How It Works

Gapping occurs in written and spoken Swedish when parallel structure makes the missing material recoverable. It is useful when the contrasting parts remain clear. It operates under specific structural constraints.

Core Structure:
The basic pattern involves parallel coordinated clauses; these can be main clauses or subordinate clause cores. The verb from the first clause is 'gapped' or omitted from the second, but its meaning is still understood.

  • Full sentence: Jag köpte ett hus och min syster köpte en lägenhet. (I bought a house and my sister bought an apartment.)
  • With gapping: Jag köpte ett hus och min syster en lägenhet. (I bought a house and my sister an apartment.)

What Can Be Gapped?
Typically, the finite verb (the main verb or an auxiliary) is gapped. If the verb phrase contains an auxiliary and a main verb, both are usually gapped.

  • Main Verb: Han talar svenska och hon [talar] tyska. → Han talar svenska och hon tyska.
  • Auxiliary + Main Verb: Jag har sett filmen och du [har sett] pjäsen. → Jag har sett filmen och du pjäsen.

Constraints on Gapping:
1. Coordination: Gapping is almost exclusively found in clauses linked by coordinating conjunctions like och, men, and eller.
2. Verb Identity: The missing verbal material must be recoverable with the intended meaning and tense. Do not expect the reader to infer a new tense or a different verb just because the second clause has a new time expression.
3. Parallel Structure: The remaining parts of the clauses (the 'remnants') must be grammatically parallel. Usually, this means both clauses have a subject and an object/complement/adverbial.

  • [Jag (S) åt fisk (O)] och [min vän (S) soppa (O)]. → Parallel Subjects and Objects.

4. Forward Gapping: The verb in the first clause provides the meaning for the gap in the second clause. Other types of coordination ellipsis can leave material unexpressed in the first clause when it is supplied at the end of the second: Lena älskar och Per hatar konsulter. That is a different arrangement from the medial verbal gap illustrated here.

The full counterparts follow ordinary word order, but an elliptical clause has no spoken finite verb to count as second. Its remaining elements generally preserve the order of their counterparts. Gapping also occurs with inversion and in questions, so it does not require an imaginary verb position immediately after a subject.

Subordinate Clauses
Gapping is possible inside parallel subordinate structures: om Karl sitter i soffan och Per i fåtöljen (if Karl is sitting on the sofa and Per in the armchair). It is not restricted to independent main clauses. Keeping a repeated verb can nevertheless make a long or potentially ambiguous sentence easier to understand.

Meaning and Usage Contrast
Jag läste en bok igår och min vän en tidning idag. (Intended: the friend is reading now.) / Jag läste en bok igår och min vän läser en tidning idag.
The shorter sentence is grammatical if the friend also read the newspaper earlier today. It does not by itself supply present läser; express that verb if the intended reading is an action happening now.

Examples (5)

  1. Jag dricker kaffe och min kollega te.

I drink coffee and my colleague [drinks] tea.

Word by Word: I drink coffee and my colleague tea.

The verb 'dricker' is omitted from the second clause because it's identical to the verb in the first clause.

  2. Han kan spela fiol, men hans bror piano.

He can play the violin, but his brother [can play] the piano.

Word by Word: He can play violin, but his brother piano.

The repeated verbal sequence kan spela is unspoken in the second clause. The contrasting subject and instrument remain.

  3. Vi reser till Spanien i juli och de till Italien.

We are traveling to Spain in July and they [are traveling] to Italy.

Word by Word: We travel to Spain in July and they to Italy.

The verb 'reser' is gapped. The remnants in the second clause are the new subject ('de') and the new prepositional phrase ('till Italien').

  4. På vintern åker jag skidor och på sommaren simmar jag.

In the winter I ski and in the summer I swim.

Word by Word: In the winter go I skis and in the summer swim I.

This illustrates different verbs, not gapping: both åker and simmar are expressed because one cannot be recovered as a repetition of the other. Other kinds of ellipsis are a separate matter.

  5. Ska du köpa den röda klänningen eller jag den blå?

Are you going to buy the red dress, or [am] I [going to buy] the blue one?

Word by Word: Shall you buy the red dress or I the blue?

Gapping can also occur in questions. The verb phrase 'Ska... köpa' is understood in the second part of the question.

Common Mistakes

  • Dropping a preposition that belongs to a contrasting phrase.

Olle talade med Oskar och Peter Ylva.
Olle talade med Oskar och Peter med Ylva.

The repeated talade can be omitted, but the second contrasting prepositional phrase keeps med. Parallel remnants need to make their grammatical relations clear.

  • Dropping att from a contrasting infinitive phrase.

Alf gillar att fiska och Barbro bada.
Alf gillar att fiska och Barbro att bada.

When gillar is omitted, the contrasting infinitive phrase retains its marker att. Gapping itself is also possible inside subordinate coordination: om Karl sitter i soffan och Per i fåtöljen.

Verb gapping is an advanced coordination technique where a verb is omitted in the second part of a sentence because it is identical to the verb in the first part.
