Requesting assistance
A useful everyday request is Kan du hjälpa mig? Start with Ursäkta when attracting attention. Snälla can add an appeal, but does not automatically make every request more courteous.
How It Works
Requesting Assistance in Swedish
Asking for help in everyday Swedish is direct, friendly, and easy to construct. The primary structure uses the auxiliary verb kan.
1. Main Request Expressions
- Kan du hjälpa mig? = Can you help me?
- Kan ni hjälpa mig? = Can you (plural) help me? Singular ni also occurs, but is not a universally preferred polite form.
2. Adding Politeness
Possible ways to frame a request include:
- Start with Ursäkta (Excuse me) before asking.
- Add snälla (please/kindly) at the end of the sentence.
3. Asking for Specific Help
To specify what you need help with, use preposition med (with) or combine with action verbs:
- Kan du hjälpa mig med... = Can you help me with...
- Kan du visa mig... = Can you show me...
- Kan du förklara... = Can you explain...
Politeness Depends On The Situation
Hjälp mig nu! is a grammatical imperative and can be entirely appropriate in an emergency. Kan du hjälpa mig? often suits an everyday request; its question form does not guarantee a gentle tone. Skulle du kunna hjälpa mig? is another way to soften a request.
Du is normal when addressing one person in much present-day Swedish. Ni is the plural form and also has singular uses, whose reception varies with setting and personal preference. Do not automatically replace du with ni when speaking to a stranger.

- Kan du hjälpa mig?
Can you help me?
Word by Word: Can you help me?
The standard and most versatile way to ask someone for help.
- Ursäkta, kan du hjälpa mig ett ögonblick?
Excuse me, can you help me for a moment?
Word by Word: Excuse, can you help me an eye-blink?
Ursäkta attracts attention before the request and is useful when approaching a stranger. The tone and situation also matter.
- Kan du hjälpa mig med väskan, snälla?
Can you help me with the bag, please?
Word by Word: Can you help me with bag-the, kindly?
Med väskan specifies what help is needed. Snälla adds an appeal; depending on tone it may sound friendly, urgent, or insistent.
- Kan du visa mig var bussen går?
Can you show me where the bus goes?
Word by Word: Can you show me where bus-the goes?
Kan du visa mig introduces a request for information or directions. Var bussen går can concern the bus route; a departure-point interpretation requires suitable context.
Common Mistakes
Using subject pronoun 'jag' instead of object pronoun 'mig'.
Kan du hjälpa jag?Kan du hjälpa mig? When referring to yourself as the object of hjälpa, use mig, not subject-form jag. A noun can occupy the same object position: Kan du hjälpa Anna?
