Particle stress

Level 3

Listen for the particle’s stress, then learn the whole meaning. Kasta UT can be literal; slå AV teven means switch off. Particle stress is not a literal-versus-idiomatic switch.

How It Works

The Basic Stress Pattern
A particle verb normally forms a stress group with an unstressed verb and a stressed particle: hälsa PÅ, slå AV. Some expressions contrast with a verb plus an unstressed preposition: hälsa PÅ min vän means visit my friend, while HÄLSA på min vän means greet my friend in the neutral contrast.

Literal Meanings Also Have Stressed Particles
Kasta UT bollen describes a literal outward movement. Han gick NER i källaren can likewise describe going downstairs with stress on ner. It is therefore wrong to require stress on the verb whenever the meaning is physical. Solen gick NER and going down into a cellar do not form a reliable literal-versus-idiomatic stress pair.

Context And Contrastive Focus
The capitals in the examples indicate one possible focus, not a compulsory pronunciation for every occurrence. Stressing SE may contrast seeing with another action; it does not by itself turn a warning into an upward gaze. Se upp för ... supplies a warning construction, while looking toward stars is identified by its context. Likewise, stressed SLOG can contrast a blow with another way of breaking something; physical separation can still have a stressed particle.

Word Order
The particle normally precedes the object: Jag stänger av teven, Jag har stängt av teven. In a declarative clause the finite verb may be separated from the particle by the subject or sentence adverbs: I dag stänger jag inte av teven. This does not mean the particle moves to the end of every clause. Compare the subordinate pattern eftersom jag inte stänger av teven.

Learning The Contrast
Use a dictionary’s pronunciation and examples for the particular expression. A following focused word can weaken particle stress, and contrastive emphasis can highlight the verb itself. Stress, syntax, and context work together; no single capitalization rule replaces them.

Examples (6)

  1. Se UPP för den hala isen!

Watch out for the slippery ice!

Word by Word: See UP for the slippery ice!

Se upp för introduces a warning, and upp bears the ordinary particle stress. The whole expression and context establish the warning meaning.

  2. Jag vill SE upp på stjärnorna.

I want to look up at the stars.

Word by Word: I want to SEE up at the stars.

Here the stars establish the literal upward-gaze interpretation. Capitals on SE represent possible contrastive emphasis on seeing; they are not a required stress rule for literal se upp.

  3. Kan du slå AV teven?

Can you turn off the TV?

Word by Word: Can you hit OFF the TV?

Slå av means switch off in this television context. AV shows the ordinary particle stress.

  4. Han SLOG av en bit av chokladkakan.

He knocked a piece off the chocolate cake.

Word by Word: He HIT off a piece of the chocolate cake.

SLOG can be stressed to contrast striking with another action. The sentence describes physical separation, but that meaning does not forbid stress on av. The verb slå suggests a blow; it is not the ordinary neutral verb for simply breaking off chocolate by hand.

  5. Vi måste gå IGENOM rapporten noggrant.

We have to go through (review) the report carefully.

Word by Word: We must go THROUGH the report carefully.

In the report context, gå igenom means review. IGENOM shows a normal stress pattern for this construction; its abstract meaning also depends on the object and context.

  6. För att komma dit måste vi GÅ igenom en lång tunnel.

To get there, we have to walk through a long tunnel.

Word by Word: For to come there must we GO through a long tunnel.

GÅ can be contrastively stressed to emphasize walking through the tunnel. The physical route is supplied by igenom en lång tunnel; do not infer a universal literal-meaning rule from the capitals.

Learn This First

To learn particle stress, you first need to understand what particle verbs (phrasal verbs) are in Swedish. You also need a basic grasp of Swedish word stress and how to conjugate verbs, as the stress shift between the verb and the particle is what changes the meaning of the expression.
