Negative Words And Scope

Level 2

Both Jag har ingenting att säga and Jag har inte någonting att säga are grammatical. To mean I see nothing, say Jag ser ingenting or Jag ser inte någonting; Jag ser inte ingenting instead denies that the amount seen is nothing.

How It Works

Two Ordinary Ways To Express Negation
Swedish can use a negative word or inte with a nonnegative indefinite. Both models belong to standard Swedish:

  • Jag känner ingen här. / Jag känner inte någon här. (I do not know anyone here.)
  • Jag har inga pengar. / Jag har inte några pengar. (I do not have any money.)
  • Jag ser ingenting. / Jag ser inte någonting. (I see nothing / do not see anything.)

Någon, något and några are not negative words. Combining one with inte is therefore not double negation. They are common in negative clauses, questions and other contexts where the referent is not specified.

Position Still Matters
The alternatives do not simply occupy the same place in every sentence. In Jag har inte sett någon, inte occupies the ordinary negation position, while någon follows sett. In Ingen kom, the negative pronoun is the subject. The main verb need not carry another inte to express the same negative meaning.

Time And Place
Han har aldrig varit i Japan uses aldrig for never. Han har inte någonsin varit i Japan is also grammatical; någonsin is not a second negation. Mina nycklar finns ingenstans and Mina nycklar finns inte någonstans likewise express that the keys cannot be found anywhere. Choice between compact and expanded wording depends on context and emphasis, not a written-versus-spoken correctness divide.

Two Negative Expressions
Ordinary standard Swedish does not generally add a second clause negation merely to reinforce the first. Jag ser inte ingenting does not normally mean I see nothing: it rejects the claim that what I see is nothing, suggesting that I do see something. For the intended no-vision meaning, use Jag ser ingenting or Jag ser inte någonting.

However, there is no universal one-negative-word-per-sentence rule. Jag visste inte att hon inte hade mat contains separate negations in separate clauses. A clause can also deny an already negative description: Det är inte omöjligt (It is not impossible). Read the scope of each expression rather than counting negative-looking words.

Negative Pronouns
Ingen, inget and inga agree with the noun or referent in the relevant construction: ingen bil, inget hus, inga bilar. Their negative meaning is already present, but that does not make every surrounding occurrence of inte impossible under a different interpretation.

Examples (5)

  1. Jag har ingenting att säga.

    I have nothing to say.

Word by Word: I have nothing to say.

Ingenting means nothing. Jag har inte någonting att säga is a grammatical alternative, with inte as the negative word.

  2. Ingen förstår problemet.

    No one understands the problem.

Word by Word: No one understands the problem.

'ingen' (no one) starts the sentence, making it negative without needing 'inte'.

  3. Vi köpte inga äpplen.

    We bought no apples.

Word by Word: We bought no apples.

'inga' is the plural form of 'ingen' and means 'no' or 'not any'. It's used with plural nouns like 'äpplen'.

  4. Han har aldrig varit i Japan.

He has never been to Japan.

Word by Word: He has never been in Japan.

Aldrig supplies the negative time meaning never. Inte någonsin is also grammatical; någonsin is not itself a negative word.

  5. Mina nycklar finns ingenstans.

    My keys are nowhere.

Word by Word: My keys exist nowhere.

Ingenstans means nowhere. Mina nycklar finns inte någonstans is also grammatical and has only one negative word, inte.

Common Mistakes

  • Using Inte Ingenting To Mean Nothing

Jag ser inte ingenting. (Intended: I see nothing.)
    Jag ser ingenting.

For the intended meaning I see nothing, use Jag ser ingenting or Jag ser inte någonting. Inte ingenting instead denies nothing and can imply that you do see something. The first sentence is not inherently ungrammatical; it expresses a different scope relationship.

Negative Words And ScopeLevel 2

Learn This First

To understand why Swedish avoids double negatives, you first need to be familiar with the standard negation particle 'inte' and the negative pronouns 'ingen', 'inget', and 'inga'. Since these pronouns already carry a negative meaning, adding 'inte' would create a double negative, which is grammatically incorrect in Swedish.
