Middle constructions
Compare Boken läses lätt with Boken är lättläst: both can describe readability. The first is an s-form and can also have a contextual passive reading. Determine the meaning from the whole sentence, not the ending alone.
How It Works
Form And Interpretation
The label middle often refers to a description of a subject’s disposition: what is easy or difficult to do with it. Swedish uses several structures for such meanings. Boken är lättläst directly describes readability. Boken läses lätt can have a similar interpretation but uses the ordinary s-form; whether a grammarian calls it a middle depends on the definition used.
Passive Does Not Mean One Specific Event
A passive can report an event, a habit, an instruction, or a general property. Brevet skrivs can describe ongoing writing, while Materialet tvättas bäst för hand recommends a method. Adding lätt, bra or bäst does not by itself create a separate grammatical voice. Siden tvättas i 30 grader is a general care instruction; it is not automatically a strict dispositional middle.
An Understood Participant
Readability involves a possible reader. Leaving that participant unnamed does not mean nobody could perform the action. Den här boken läses lätt, även av nybörjare explicitly names a class of readers with av; it is compatible with a generic passive interpretation. Compare Boken är lättläst för nybörjare, where för specifies whose reading experience is being considered.
Other S-Forms
Do not assume that every deponent verb has an agentive subject: hoppas presents someone who hopes, while åldras presents someone undergoing aging. Terminology for nonpassive s-verbs varies. Reciprocal uses, such as Vi träffas, express mutual participation; they are not defined simply by whether the grammatical subject is singular or plural.
Event, Recommendation, Or Property?
Dörren öppnas utåt, inte inåt can describe the door’s design, but context can also describe how it is opened on an occasion. Den här sången sjungs vackert is grammatical and describes beautiful singing; it does not automatically mean that the song itself is beautiful. Den här dörren öppnas lätt av mig varje morgon is likewise a grammatical habitual passive. A preference for another wording is not a grammar error.
An anticausative such as Glaset sprack presents a change without naming a causer. That does not assert that the event had no external physical cause. A dispositional reading instead concerns what tends to happen or can readily be done; an event report and a property description should not be conflated.
Examples (5)
- Den här boken läses lätt, även av nybörjare.
This book reads easily, even for beginners.
Word by Word: This here book reads-S easily, even by beginners.
This can describe ease of reading. Av nybörjare explicitly names a class of readers, so generic passive is an appropriate analysis; do not use the example to prove that an agent phrase is impossible.
- Dörren öppnas utåt, inte inåt.
The door opens outwards, not inwards.
Word by Word: The door opens-S outwards, not inwards.
This commonly describes how the door is designed to open. The same words can also describe the direction of opening on an occasion; context determines the reading.
- Materialet tvättas bäst för hand.
The material washes best by hand.
Word by Word: The material washes-S best by hand.
This recommends hand washing, often because of the material’s properties. A generic passive instruction need not be classified as a distinct middle construction.
- Vissa ostar äts med fördel efter en timme i rumstemperatur.
Some cheeses are best eaten after an hour at room temperature.
Word by Word: Certain cheeses eat-S with advantage after one hour in room-temperature.
The passive äts gives a serving recommendation. The preferred eating conditions can relate to the cheese’s properties without asserting a separate middle-voice verb form.
- Sådana frågor besvaras inte enkelt.
Such questions are not answered easily.
Word by Word: Such questions answer-S not easily.
This general statement concerns difficulty in answering such questions. The s-form alone does not establish whether the cause lies in the questions, the available knowledge, or another contextual factor.

- Deponent -s verbs
Nonpassive s-verbs include several semantic groups, not just agents acting: compare hoppas and åldras. Some descriptions use deponent broadly enough to include medial uses; terminology varies.

Reciprocal träffas can mean meet each other. The contrast is mutual participation versus a property or event reading, not plural versus singular subjects.
Level 3 - Change of state intransitives
Anticausative Glaset sprack presents a change without expressing a causer. It does not deny any external cause. A middle-like reading instead presents a disposition or suitability.
Level 6 - bli + Past ParticipleBecome Passive
Bli plus participle is another passive construction. It often presents an event or resulting state, while s-passives readily express habits and generalizations too. Compare the intended reading in context.
