för-

Intensifying Prefix

Level 3

The prefix för- attaches to the beginning of verbs to alter their meaning. It often adds a sense of excess, negativity, or transformation.

How It Works

The prefix för- occurs in many established Swedish verbs. Unlike particle verbs, the för- prefix is inseparable; it always stays attached to the verb stem.

While its meaning isn't always predictable and must often be learned case-by-case, several recurring meaning groups can help organize the vocabulary:

  • Intensification or Excess: Some verbs express excess; others describe going beyond an intended limit, such as waking too late. These verbs are often reflexive, using sig.
    - sova (to sleep) → försova sig (to oversleep)
    - äta (to eat) → föräta sig (to overeat)
  • Causing a Change or Transformation: för- can be used to create a verb that means 'to make something...' based on an adjective or noun.
    - bättre (better) → förbättra (to improve/make better)
    - stor (big) → förstora (to enlarge/make bigger)
    - klar (clear) → förklara (to explain/make clear)
  • Negative Outcome or Deprivation: The prefix can indicate that the action leads to a loss, destruction, or other negative result.
    - förlora (to lose)
    - störa (to disturb) → förstöra (to destroy)
    - gift (poison) → förgifta (to poison)

Because för- is not a fully productive prefix (you can't add it to just any verb), it's best to learn each för- verb as a separate vocabulary item.

Examples (4)

  1. Jag försov mig i morse och kom för sent till jobbet.

I overslept this morning and was late for work.

Word by Word: I overslept me this morning and came too late to the-job.

Försova sig means to oversleep: wake later than intended and risk being late. It does not necessarily mean sleeping too many hours overall.

  2. Kan du förstora det här fotot?

    Can you enlarge this photo?

Word by Word: Can you enlarge this here photo?

förstora is formed from för- + stor (big), meaning 'to make big' or 'enlarge'.

  3. De förlorade matchen i sista minuten.

They lost the game in the last minute.

Word by Word: They lost the-game in last minute.

Förlora is the established verb lose. Learn its whole meaning rather than trying to derive it from an independent modern verb lora.

  4. Företaget försöker förbättra sin kundtjänst.

The company is trying to improve its customer service.

Word by Word: The-company tries to-improve its customer-service.

förbättra is formed from för- + bättre (better), meaning 'to make better' or 'improve'.

Common Mistakes

  • Trying to add för- to any verb to mean 'too much'.

    Jag försprang i parken.
Jag sprang för mycket i parken.

För- is not freely attachable to any verb with a predictable too-much meaning. Learn established words. For running excessively, say sprang för mycket; försprang is not the ordinary expression for that intended meaning.

  • Confusing the prefix för- with the separate word för (for/because/too).

Jag måste för klara det här.
    Jag måste förklara det här.

för- is a prefix and must be attached to the verb (förklara). The word för is a separate preposition or adverb. They are not interchangeable.
