Even/only constructions

Level 5

Scalar particles are words like 'even' (till och med), 'only' (bara), and 'at least' (åtminstone) that highlight something as being more, less, or exactly what's expected.

How It Works

Scalar particles are a type of sentence particle that modify an element by placing it on an implicit scale of likelihood, quantity, or desirability. The placement of the particle is crucial as it determines the focus of the sentence.

Key Scalar Particles:

  • Bara / Endast (Only/Just): These are restrictive particles. They assert that the focused element is the only one for which the proposition is true, excluding all other alternatives. Bara is common in speech and writing, while endast is more formal.
Ex: Jag dricker bara kaffe på morgonen. (I only drink coffee in the morning.)
  • Till och med / Även (Even): These are additive particles that point to an endpoint on a scale of expectation.
    - Till och med (often abbreviated t.o.m.) is used for surprising, extreme, or unlikely items. It means 'even' in the sense of 'contrary to expectation'.
Ex: Till och med experterna var förvånade. (Even the experts were surprised.)
    - Även can mean 'also' or a weaker 'even'. In its also use, it adds an item without necessarily ranking it as unexpected. In other contexts it can have an even reading.
Ex: Vi besökte Stockholm och även Göteborg. (We visited Stockholm and also Gothenburg.)
  • Inte ens (Not even): This is the negative counterpart to 'till och med'. It indicates that not even the most basic, expected, or minimal requirement on the scale was met.
Ex: Han svarade inte ens på mitt meddelande. (He didn't even reply to my message.)
  • Åtminstone (At least): This particle specifies a minimum threshold on a scale. It indicates that the reality is no less than what is stated, and possibly more.
Ex: Det kommer att ta åtminstone en timme. (It will take at least an hour.)

Placement and Focus:
The meaning of the sentence can change dramatically depending on where the scalar particle is placed. It can stand next to its focus, in the middle field, or sometimes later. Position, stress and context work together to identify the intended focus.

  • Bara jag läste boken. (Only I read the book. No one else did.)
  • Jag läste bara boken. (I read only the book. I didn't read any other materials.)
  • Jag bara läste boken. (I just/merely read the book. I didn't analyze it deeply.)

A particle in the middle field normally follows subordinate adverbial order. A particle attached to another phrase stays with that phrase: att bara barnen fick glass; att barnen fick bara glass.
Ex: Hon sa att hon bara ville ha en sallad. (She said that she only wanted a salad.)

Surprise Comes From Context
Han gillar all mat, till och med pizza can be perfectly appropriate if pizza is unexpectedly included in the relevant situation. The grammar does not decide which foods should be surprising. Choose även for a simple addition and till och med when presenting an item as an unexpected inclusion.

Examples (6)

  1. Till och med chefen skrattade åt skämtet.

Even the boss laughed at the joke.

Word by Word: Even the boss / laughed / at the joke.

'Till och med' highlights the unlikeliness or surprise of the boss laughing.

  2. Jag vill bara ha ett glas vatten.

I only want a glass of water.

Word by Word: I want only have a glass water.

'Bara' restricts the request to nothing more than a glass of water.

  3. Han kunde inte ens komma ihåg mitt namn.

He couldn't even remember my name.

Word by Word: He could not even come on-mind my name.

'Inte ens' emphasizes the failure to meet a very basic expectation (remembering a name).

  4. Om du inte kan hjälpa till, kan du åtminstone låta bli att störa.

If you can't help, you can at least refrain from disturbing.

Word by Word: If you not can help to, can you at-least let be to disturb.

'Åtminstone' presents the minimum acceptable behavior.

  5. Bara barnen fick glass.

Only the children got ice cream.

Word by Word: Only the-children got ice-cream.

The focus is on 'barnen'. No one else but the children got ice cream.

  6. Barnen fick bara glass.

The children only got ice cream.

Word by Word: The-children got only ice-cream.

The focus is on 'glass'. The children got ice cream and nothing else (e.g., no cake).

Common Mistakes

  • Misplacing 'bara' and unintentionally changing the sentence's focus.

Jag bara pratade med Anna. (Intended meaning: Only I talked to Anna.)
    Bara jag pratade med Anna.

Bara jag pratade med Anna clearly restricts the subject: nobody else did. Jag bara pratade med Anna normally focuses the activity or a later phrase. Stress and context can affect interpretation, so place bara by the subject when that is what you mean.

Learn This First

To understand scalar particles like 'till och med' (even) and 'inte ens' (not even), learners must first be familiar with basic negation and the individual prepositions that form these fixed idiomatic expressions.
