visst

Certainly/surely

Level 3

Use 'visst' to mean 'apparently' or 'it seems' for new information. It can also mean 'of course' to agree, or 'right?' to ask for confirmation.

How It Works

'Visst' is a versatile sentence particle that conveys different meanings depending on context and intonation.

Here are its main uses:

  • 1. Reporting New or Surprising Information:
Used within a sentence to mean 'apparently', 'it seems', or 'I hear'. It can present information as apparent, newly noticed or reported. It need not invariably be new or based on hearsay; direct observation can also motivate it. In this unstressed reading it does not simply assert certainty. Stressed visst can have a different, emphatically certain meaning. In the ordinary middle-field position of a declarative main clause, visst follows the finite verb. The verb-second rule governs the finite verb’s position, not every position of visst.
Example: Han kommer visst imorgon. (Apparently, he's coming tomorrow.)
  • 2. Expressing Agreement (Standalone):
Used by itself as a response, 'visst' means 'sure', 'of course', or 'certainly'. It's a positive and common way to agree to a request.
Example: - Får jag låna boken? - Visst! (- May I borrow the book? - Of course!)
  • 3. Seeking Confirmation:
A clear model puts visst first, followed by the finite verb: Visst är mötet klockan tre? It asks for confirmation with an expectation of agreement. A final short confirmation cue relies on conversational intonation and should not be treated as the only or basic pattern.
Example: Mötet är klockan tre, visst? (The meeting is at three, right?)
  • 4. Expressing Concession:
Sometimes, 'visst' is used to acknowledge a point before presenting a contrasting one. It means something like 'It's true that...' or 'Sure...'.
Example: Visst, det är dyrt, men kvaliteten är fantastisk. (Sure, it's expensive, but the quality is fantastic.)

Emphatic Certainty
Jag har visst betalat can mean I certainly have paid when visst is stressed, contradicting someone’s doubt. This contrasts with unstressed Det är visst stängt, which presents the closure as apparent information.

Agreement And Concession
Visst är filmen bra can affirm a positive assessment; followed by men boken är bättre it concedes that point before adding a contrast. A question with initial visst often expects agreement. These meanings cannot be predicted from an English apparently gloss alone.

Examples (4)

  1. - Får jag sitta här? - Visst!

    - May I sit here? - Of course!

Word by Word: - May I sit here? - Certainly!

Here, 'visst' is used as a standalone affirmative response, meaning 'sure' or 'of course'.

  2. Det är visst stängt på söndagar.

    Apparently, it's closed on Sundays.

Word by Word: It is apparently closed on Sundays.

On the intended unstressed reading, visst presents the closure as apparent or reported information. The source could be something just observed; it does not have to be hearsay.

  3. Mötet är klockan tre, visst?

The meeting is at three, right?

Word by Word: The-meeting is o'clock three, right?

This is intended as a conversational request for confirmation. A clear, broadly usable model with visst is Visst är mötet klockan tre? A familiar sentence-final alternative is Mötet är klockan tre, eller hur?

  4. Visst är filmen bra, men boken är bättre.

Sure, the movie is good, but the book is better.

Word by Word: Certainly is the-movie good, but the-book is better.

This example shows 'visst' used for concession. It acknowledges that the movie is good before presenting a counter-argument.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing 'visst' (particle) with 'säker' (adjective).

Jag är visst på att hon kommer.
Jag är säker på att hon kommer.

For I am sure that..., use Jag är säker på att.... The sentence particle visst does not occupy the adjective slot in Jag är visst på.... Viss also exists as an adjective and visst as its neuter form, for example ett visst svar, but that is a separate use.
