es decir/o sea
That Is (Reformulation)
Use 'es decir' or 'o sea' to say 'that is' or 'in other words'.
How It Works
Es decir and o sea are essential discourse markers in Spanish used to connect ideas by reformulating what was just said. They help the speaker or writer to be more precise, clear, or to correct themselves. They overlap in reformulation, but do not have identical functions in every context.
Key Functions:
- Clarification/Explanation: To provide more specific information or explain a term. This is the most common use.
Mi hermano es filántropo, es decir, dona mucho dinero a causas benéficas. (My brother is a philanthropist, that is, he donates a lot of money to charitable causes.) - Simplification: To rephrase a complex idea in simpler terms.
El acusado fue absuelto por falta de pruebas, o sea, lo declararon no culpable. (The defendant was acquitted due to lack of evidence, in other words, they declared him not guilty.) - Correction: To correct a previous statement.
Nos vemos el jueves... o sea, el viernes, que el jueves no puedo. (See you on Thursday... I mean, Friday, since I can't on Thursday.)
Register and Usage:
- Es decir is considered more neutral or formal. It is common in contexts such as academic writing, professional emails, and formal presentations.
- O sea is much more common in informal, everyday conversation. In spoken Spanish, it's often used as a filler word, similar to "like" or "I mean" in English. While perfectly acceptable in speech, it's best to avoid overusing it in formal writing.
Punctuation: Reformulating uses are commonly set off by commas. Consequential o sea que normally has no comma between sea and que. If they connect two independent clauses, a semicolon may be used before them and a comma after.
Inference
O sea que can introduce the speaker’s conclusion rather than an equivalent restatement. A conclusion may be mistaken; the connector does not establish its truth.
Examples (5)
- El vuelo tiene una escala en Panamá, es decir, hace una parada antes del destino final.
The flight has a stopover in Panama; that is, it makes a stop before the final destination.
Word by Word: The flight has a stopover in Panama, that is to say, it makes a stop before the final destination.
Es decir clarifies what a stopover involves. A flight with a stop is not necessarily classified as indirect; direct and nonstop are different travel terms.
- No me ha llamado en toda la semana, o sea que no está interesado.
He hasn't called me all week, in other words, he's not interested.
Word by Word: He has not called me in all the week, or be it, that he is not interested.
O sea que introduces the speaker’s inference. A week without a call does not logically prove a lack of interest.
- La reunión es a las tres, o sea, en diez minutos.
The meeting is at three, I mean, in ten minutes.
Word by Word: The meeting is at the three, or be it, in ten minutes.
A simple clarification using the more informal 'o sea'.
- Necesito el informe para mañana sin falta. Es decir, es de máxima prioridad.
I need the report for tomorrow without fail. In other words, it's a top priority.
Word by Word: I need the report for tomorrow without fail. It is to say, it is of maximum priority.
A more formal use of 'es decir' to emphasize the importance of a statement.
- Me dijo que vendría a las 8, pero son las 9... o sea que ya no viene.
He told me he would come at 8, but it's 9... so, I guess he's not coming anymore.
Word by Word: He told me that he would come at the 8, but it is the 9... or be it, that now not he comes.
'O sea' introduces a conclusion drawn from the situation.
Common Mistakes
Using 'es decir' or 'o sea' to mean 'because'.
Llegué tarde, es decir había mucho tráfico.Llegué tarde porque había mucho tráfico.'Es decir' and 'o sea' reformulate or clarify an idea, they don't state the cause or reason for it. To give a reason, use 'porque' (because).
Choosing a discourse marker without considering register or repetition.
En conclusión, los resultados fueron negativos, o sea, la hipótesis fue refutada.En conclusión, los resultados fueron negativos, es decir, la hipótesis fue refutada. Both examples are grammatical, and a single o sea is not overuse. Es decir may suit the desired formal tone. Repetition or register mismatch is a contextual editing issue, not a ban on o sea in writing.
How It Connects

To understand these reformulation markers, learners need to recognize the verb 'ser' in both its indicative ('es') and subjunctive ('sea') forms, as well as the basic conjunction 'o'.
