Subjunctive of Ser

Level 3

Use sea, seas, sea, seamos, sean after expressions of wish, emotion, doubt, or impersonal statements to talk about what something or someone is.

How It Works

The verb ser is irregular in the present subjunctive. Its forms must be memorized.

Conjugation:

  • (yo) sea
  • (tú) seas
  • (él/ella/usted) sea
  • (nosotros/as) seamos
  • (ellos/ellas/ustedes) sean

The subjunctive of ser is used in dependent clauses after a main clause expresses subjectivity. This is often summarized by the acronym W.E.I.R.D.O.:

1. Wishes/Will: To express what you want, wish, or demand.
Ejemplo: Quiero que seas honesto conmigo. (I want you to be honest with me.)

2. Emotion: To express feelings like happiness, sadness, or surprise.
Ejemplo: Me alegra que el viaje sea pronto. (I'm happy that the trip is soon.)

3. Impersonal Expressions: After phrases like 'es importante que', 'es necesario que', etc.
Ejemplo: Es necesario que la decisión sea justa. (It's necessary that the decision be fair.)

4. Recommendations/Requests: To recommend, suggest, or ask for something.
Ejemplo: El doctor recomienda que la dieta sea balanceada. (The doctor recommends that the diet be balanced.)

5. Doubt/Denial: To express doubt, uncertainty, or denial.
Ejemplo: Dudo que él sea el actor famoso. (I doubt that he is the famous actor.)

6. Ojalá: To express a strong hope or wish.
Ejemplo: Ojalá que el resultado sea positivo. (I hope the result is positive.)

A key use is contrasting belief with disbelief. Belief uses the indicative, while disbelief uses the subjunctive.

  • Creo que es una buena idea. (I think it is a good idea.) - Indicative
  • No creo que sea una buena idea. (I don't think it is a good idea.) - Subjunctive

I hope that you are very happy.

Word by Word: I hope that you-be very happy.

  2. Es importante que el informe sea claro y conciso.

It's important that the report be clear and concise.

Word by Word: It is important that the report be clear and concise.

  3. Dudo que esa sea la mejor solución.

I doubt that is the best solution.

Word by Word: I doubt that that be the best solution.

  4. Me sorprende que seamos los primeros en llegar.

It surprises me that we are the first to arrive.

  5. Busco un profesor que sea paciente.

I'm looking for a teacher who is patient.

Word by Word: I-look-for a teacher that be patient.

The subjunctive 'sea' is used here because the teacher is an unknown or hypothetical person. The speaker isn't referring to a specific, known teacher.

  6. Ojalá que no sea nada grave.

    I hope it's nothing serious.

Word by Word: Hopefully that not it-be nothing serious.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the indicative ('es') instead of the subjunctive ('sea') after expressions of doubt.

No creo que es una buena idea.
No creo que sea una buena idea.

Expressions of doubt or denial like 'no creo que' require the subjunctive mood to convey uncertainty. The indicative 'es' states a fact, which contradicts the doubt expressed in the main clause.

  • Using 'esté' when a general quality is meant.

Different MeaningEspero que la película esté interesante.
Espero que la película sea interesante.

Both sentences are correct. 'Sea interesante' names a general quality of the movie. 'Esté interesante' fits how it turns out, or how it is right now. Ser and estar keep their usual contrast in the subjunctive.
