es necesario que + Subjunctive
Subjunctive with Necessity
Use 'es necesario que' followed by a verb in the subjunctive to say 'it is necessary that...'.
How It Works
Es necesario que + subjunctive means “it is necessary that.” It evaluates an action or situation as necessary.
Structure: Es necesario que + optional subject + subjunctive verb. Compare Es necesario que llegues a tiempo (You need to arrive on time) and Es necesario que yo vaya (I need to go). An explicit subject is optional, and the speaker can be the person who performs the action.
This is often called an impersonal expression in practical teaching because it does not name a person making the judgment. Grammatically, however, the que-clause can function as the subject of es necesario. The subjunctive follows the necessity evaluation; it is not a general test for whether an event is factual.
Mood and tense:
- Es necesario que vengas mañana. Present subjunctive for a future visit.
- Es necesario que hayas terminado para mañana. Perfect subjunctive for completion by tomorrow.
- Era necesario que vinieras. Imperfect subjunctive from a past viewpoint.
With an infinitive: Es necesario estudiar states that studying is necessary without a finite verb identifying a person. Context may still make the person clear. Compare hay que estudiar. Choosing a finite clause is not a rule that the person must differ from the speaker.

Common Mistakes
Using the indicative mood instead of the subjunctive.
Es necesario que tú vienes mañana.Es necesario que tú vengas mañana. The necessity construction es necesario que selects subjunctive. For the intended visit tomorrow, use vengas rather than indicative vienes. This mood choice follows the construction, rather than a universal factual versus nonfactual distinction.

Level 1 - tener que + InfinitiveObligation with Tener
This expresses a personal obligation ('I have to...', 'You have to...'). It's a useful contrast to the impersonal necessity expressed by 'es necesario que'.
