Gustar-type Verbs

Level 1

Verbs like 'encantar' (to love), 'interesar' (to interest), and 'importar' (to matter) follow the same 'backwards' structure as 'gustar'.

How It Works

In Spanish, some verbs that express feelings or opinions work differently than in English. The most famous is 'gustar', but many others follow the same pattern. Instead of 'I love pizza', you say 'Pizza is enchanting to me' (Me encanta la pizza).

Common Gustar-type Verbs:

  • encantar - to love (something)
  • interesar - to interest
  • importar - to matter, to be important
  • molestar - to bother, to annoy
  • fascinar - to fascinate
  • doler - to hurt, to ache

The Structure:
The key is to remember this structure:
(Optional A phrase) + Indirect Object Pronoun + Verb + Subject (the thing being liked)

1. Indirect Object Pronoun: This shows WHO is feeling the emotion. It's mandatory.

  • me (to me)
  • te (to you, informal)
  • le (to him/her/you, formal)
  • nos (to us)
  • os (to you all, informal)
  • les (to them/you all, formal)

2. Verb Form: The verb is conjugated to match the subject (the thing/person causing the feeling). You will almost always use one of two forms:

  • Singular form (e.g., encanta, interesa) if the subject is singular.
  • Plural form (e.g., encantan, interesan) if the subject is plural.

3. Optional 'A' Phrase: To add emphasis or clarify who 'le' or 'les' refers to, you can add a + person at the beginning.

  • A mí me...
  • A ti te...
  • A él/ella/usted le...
  • A nosotros/as nos...
  • A vosotros/as os...
  • A ellos/ellas/ustedes les...

Example Breakdown:
A ella le importan sus amigos.

  • A ella - Clarifies who 'le' is.
  • le - The indirect object pronoun ('to her').
  • importan - Plural verb because the subject...
  • sus amigos - ...is plural.

Examples (5)

  1. Me encanta el chocolate.

    I love chocolate.

Word by Word: To me enchants the chocolate.

'Chocolate' is singular, so we use the singular verb form 'encanta'.

  2. A ella le interesan los libros de ciencia ficción.

She is interested in science fiction books.

Word by Word: To her interest the books of science fiction.

'Los libros' is plural, so the verb is 'interesan'. The phrase 'A ella' clarifies that 'le' refers to 'her'.

  3. No nos importa la lluvia.

The rain doesn't matter to us.

Word by Word: Not to us matters the rain.

  4. ¿Te molestan los mosquitos?

    Do mosquitoes bother you?

Word by Word: To you bother the mosquitoes?

The subject 'los mosquitos' is plural, so the verb must be 'molestan'.

  5. A mis padres les fascina viajar.

My parents are fascinated by traveling.

Word by Word: To my parents fascinates to travel.

When the subject is an infinitive verb like 'viajar', always use the singular form of the gustar-type verb ('fascina').

Common Mistakes

  • Using a subject pronoun (yo, tú) instead of an indirect object pronoun (me, te).

    Yo encanto la pizza.
    Me encanta la pizza.

These verbs require an indirect object pronoun (me, te, le, etc.) to show who is experiencing the feeling. 'Yo' is a subject pronoun and cannot be used this way.

  • Not matching the verb to the thing being liked (the subject).

    Me interesa los documentales.
    Me interesan los documentales.

The verb must agree in number with the subject. Since 'los documentales' is plural, the verb must also be plural ('interesan').

  • Forgetting the 'a' in the optional clarification phrase.

Mi hermano le encanta el fútbol.
A mi hermano le encanta el fútbol.

When you add a phrase at the beginning to clarify or emphasize who you're talking about, it must start with the preposition 'a'.
