Future Tense -IR Verbs

Level 3

Future tense endings for regular -IR verbs.

How It Works

The simple future tense in Spanish is used to talk about actions that will happen in the future. For regular verbs ending in -ir, forming the future tense is straightforward.

Rule: Keep the entire infinitive and add the appropriate ending for the subject.

The endings are:

  • yo: -é
  • tú: -ás
  • él/ella/usted: -á
  • nosotros/as: -emos
  • vosotros/as: -éis
  • ellos/ellas/ustedes: -án

Let's see the conjugation for vivir (to live):

  • yo viviré (I will live)
  • tú vivirás (you will live)
  • él/ella/usted vivirá (he/she/you will live)
  • nosotros/as viviremos (we will live)
  • vosotros/as viviréis (you all will live)
  • ellos/ellas/ustedes vivirán (they/you all will live)

This tense is often used for more formal statements, promises, or predictions compared to the more common 'ir + a + infinitive' structure (e.g., 'voy a vivir').

Note that while the endings are regular for all verb types (-ar, -er, -ir), some common verbs have irregular stems in the future tense.

Examples (6)

  1. Escribiré una carta mañana.

I will write a letter tomorrow.

Word by Word: I will write a letter tomorrow.

  2. ¿Abrirás la ventana, por favor?

Will you open the window, please?

Word by Word: Will you open the window, please?

  3. Ella decidirá qué hacer más tarde.

She will decide what to do later.

Word by Word: She will decide what to do more late.

  4. Viviremos en Madrid el próximo año.

We will live in Madrid next year.

Word by Word: We will live in Madrid the next year.

  5. ¿Subiréis al último piso?

Will you all (vosotros) go up to the top floor?

Word by Word: Will you all go up to the last floor?

  6. Ellos recibirán el paquete pronto.

They will receive the package soon.

Word by Word: They will receive the package soon.

Common Mistakes

  • Removing the '-ir' ending before adding the future ending.

    Yo escribé la carta mañana.
    Yo escribiré la carta mañana.

Unlike the present or preterite tenses, the future tense is formed by adding the ending to the full infinitive. Do not remove the '-ir' part of the verb.

  • Using the present where the lesson asks for the simple future.

Different MeaningNosotros vivimos en esa casa el año que viene.
Nosotros viviremos en esa casa el año que viene.

'Nosotros vivimos en esa casa el año que viene' is correct: the present can talk about the future with a time word. The simple future, 'viviremos', is the form this lesson practices.

Learn This First

To learn the future tense for -ir verbs, you must first understand Spanish subject pronouns to know which person is being conjugated.
