imeti: imam

Having Something

Level 1

Present forms of imeti begin imam, imaš, ima and include dual imava, imata and plural imamo, imate, imajo.

How It Works

Present forms of imeti begin imam, imaš, ima and include dual imava, imata and plural imamo, imate, imajo. A thing possessed is normally a direct object in the accusative.

Build an affirmative statement with a finite form plus an object: imam + knjigo. In Imaš čas?, čas is masculine inanimate and its accusative resembles its dictionary form. Under negation, both the verb and ordinary object pattern change: nimam časa.

Examples (3)

  1. Imam knjigo.

    I have a book.

  2. Imaš čas?

    Do you have time?

  3. Imava psa.

    We two have a dog.
