čeprav

Conceding a Contrast

Level 5

Čeprav introduces a fact that contrasts with what might normally be expected.

How It Works

Čeprav introduces a fact that contrasts with what might normally be expected. Its clause is separated by a comma and keeps the tense and agreement needed for its own meaning.

Čeprav concedes that the contrasting circumstance holds. In Prišel je, čeprav je bil utrujen, tiredness is presented as a fact, not an open condition. Če bi bil utrujen would instead make a hypothetical condition and change the meaning.
