vzhľadom na / v súvislosti s

With Regard to and in Connection with

Level 5

Vzhľadom na (with regard to, given) takes the accusative: vzhľadom na počasie. V súvislosti s (in connection with) takes the instrumental: v súvislosti so zmenou.

How It Works

vzhľadom na + accusative. Use it to name a circumstance that explains a decision or a statement: Vzhľadom na zlé počasie sa zápas nekoná. (Given the bad weather, the match is not taking place.) The preposition is always na. Vzhľadom k with the dative is a common error that copies Czech vzhledem k. Two similar formal phrases also take the accusative: s ohľadom na and so zreteľom na.

v súvislosti s + instrumental. Use it to link an event or statement to something else: Polícia v súvislosti s krádežou zadržala dvoch mužov. (The police detained two men in connection with the theft.) As in s / so + instrumental, s becomes so before words that start with s, z, š or ž: v súvislosti so zmenou (see prepositions with an extra vowel).

Before a whole clause. Neither phrase can stand directly before a clause, so the pronoun to takes the case and the clause follows after a comma:

  • Vzhľadom na to, že prší, ostaneme doma. (Given that it is raining, we will stay at home.)
  • V súvislosti s tým, že sa mení cestovný poriadok, ... (In connection with the fact that the timetable is changing, ...)

Register. Both phrases are common in the news, official letters and announcements. In conversation, people more often use keďže (since) or pre (because of). Kvôli is also heard with this meaning, but standard Slovak uses pre for a cause.

Common Mistakes

  • Using k after vzhľadom, as in Czech.

Vzhľadom k situácii sme stretnutie zrušili.
Vzhľadom na situáciu sme stretnutie zrušili.

Standard Slovak uses only vzhľadom na with the accusative. Vzhľadom k with the dative comes from Czech.

  • Using the wrong case after vzhľadom na.

Vzhľadom na zlom počasí zápas zrušili.
Vzhľadom na zlé počasie zápas zrušili.

Na in this phrase takes the accusative, not the locative: zlé počasie.

  • Using the genitive after v súvislosti s.

V súvislosti s projektu sme cestovali do Brna.
V súvislosti s projektom sme cestovali do Brna.

S means with here and takes the instrumental: projekt → projektom.
