Future of Imperfective Verbs

Imperfective verbs form the future with budem, budeš, bude, budeme, budete or budú plus the infinitive: Budem pracovať (I will be working), Nebudem čakať (I will not wait).

How It Works

Form. Budem changes for person, and the infinitive stays the same:

  • Budem pracovať. I will work.
  • Čo budeš robiť zajtra? What will you do tomorrow?
  • Zajtra bude pršať. It will rain tomorrow.

Which verbs. This future is for imperfective verbs such as robiť, pracovať, čítať and učiť sa. A perfective verb such as urobiť or prísť already has future meaning in its present form: urobím, prídem. See perfective verbs for the future. Ísť also has a special future, pôjdem; see future of verbs of motion.

Negation. Put ne- on budem: Nebudem čakať.

Word order with sa and si. Sa and si cannot start a sentence. They follow budem: Budem sa učiť. or Zajtra sa budem učiť. See reflexive verbs with sa.

    Sa follows budeme.

    Ne- joins budem.

  5. Zajtra bude pršať.

    It will rain tomorrow.

  6. Budem ti písať každý týždeň.

    I'll write to you every week.

    A repeated action uses the imperfective future.

Common Mistakes

  • Using budem with a perfective verb.

    Zajtra budem urobiť úlohu.
    Zajtra urobím úlohu.

    Urobiť is perfective, so its present form urobím already means I will do. Budem goes only with imperfective verbs.

  • Conjugating the second verb as well.

    Budem pracujem.
    Budem pracovať.

    Only budem changes for person. The second verb stays in the infinitive.

  • Starting a sentence with sa.

    Sa budem učiť.
    Budem sa učiť.

    Sa is unstressed and cannot stand first. Put it after budem.
