tým, že

By Doing Something: Tým, Že

Level 5

English says by + -ing; Slovak says tým, že + an ordinary verb in the right tense and person: Ušetríš peniaze tým, že budeš variť doma. (You'll save money by cooking at home.)

How It Works

By doing something. Slovak has no -ing form to use after a preposition, so it states the action as a full clause: Pomohol mi tým, že ma odviezol na stanicu. (He helped me by driving me to the station.) The verb in the že clause has its own tense and person.

How it works. Tým is the instrumental form of the pronoun to, and the instrumental is the case of means. Then že introduces the content of that means. The clause can also come first: Tým, že som prišiel neskoro, zmeškal som začiatok. (By arriving late, I missed the beginning.)

Other verbs, other forms of to. Many verbs combine with to + že, and to always takes the case or preposition the verb needs:

  • začať tým, že (to begin by), líšiť sa tým, že (to differ in that)
  • ďakovať za to, že (to thank for), tešiť sa z toho, že (to be glad that)

Means and reason. Often the means is also the reason, so tým, že can be translated as since or because: Tým, že bývame blízko, chodíme do práce pešo. (Since we live close by, we walk to work.) Do not confuse it with the tým of čím ... tým (the more ... the more).

Examples (5)

  1. Pomôžeš mi tým, že prídeš včas.

You'll help me by coming on time.

    Word by Word: You-will-help me by-that, that you-will-come on-time.

  2. Ušetríš veľa peňazí tým, že budeš variť doma.

You'll save a lot of money by cooking at home.

    Word by Word: You-will-save much of-money by-that, that you-will cook at-home.

  3. Učiteľka začala hodinu tým, že nám zahrala pesničku.

The teacher began the lesson by playing us a song.

Word by Word: Teacher began lesson by-that, that to-us she-played song.

  4. Tým, že bývame blízko, chodíme do práce pešo.

Since we live close by, we walk to work.

Word by Word: By-that, that we-live close, we-go to work on-foot.

Here the means is also the reason.

  5. Tieto dve slová sa líšia tým, že jedno má dĺžeň.

These two words differ in that one of them has a long-vowel mark.

Word by Word: These two words themselves differ by-that, that one has long-mark.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out tým.

    Pomôžeš mi, že prídeš včas.
Pomôžeš mi tým, že prídeš včas.

Pomôcť cannot take a že clause directly. Tým names the means, and the že clause explains it.

  • Using the wrong form of to.

Ušetríš peniaze to, že budeš variť doma.
Ušetríš peniaze tým, že budeš variť doma.

The means is expressed by the instrumental, so to becomes tým.

  • Copying English with an infinitive.

    Pomôžeš mi tým prísť včas.
Pomôžeš mi tým, že prídeš včas.

After tým you need že and a verb with a person ending: prídeš, budeš variť.
