what

What for Corrective Justification

Level 4

Final what can say that a relevant fact should settle the point.

How It Works

Assertion, Not a Wh-Question
In I paid already what., final what does not mean that the speaker is asking what they paid for. It reinforces the payment as a reason against a contrary claim.

A Fact Against an Assumption
The clause supplies the corrective information. What draws attention to why that information matters in the current exchange.

Watch the Force
The reply may be playful between friends or sound defensive in a disagreement. Do not translate it automatically as a neutral question tag. It is also different from initial what in What you want?, which asks for information.

Examples (3)

  1. I paid already what.

    But I have already paid.

Someone has wrongly suggested that the speaker still owes the money.

  2. Still got ten minutes what.

There are still ten minutes left, after all.

The speaker challenges the claim that it is already too late.

  3. This is the same address what.

But this is the same address.

The speaker points to a fact that conflicts with the claim that they have the wrong location.
