meh
Meh for Surprised or Doubtful Questions
A meh question often starts from an assumption the speaker does not expect to be true.
How It Works
Questioning an Assumption
Place meh after the proposition being questioned. The speaker may have evidence against it or may simply be surprised by it.
Compare the Stance
Tomorrow got class? can be a straightforward schedule question. Tomorrow got class meh? often suggests that the speaker thought there was no class. The second is not just a longer version of the first.
Use the Right Relationship
Doubt can be friendly or confrontational. A meh question may sound challenging when directed at someone whose claim you are disputing. It is not a general-purpose ending for all yes/no questions.
Examples (3)
- Today public holiday, the office open meh?
It is a public holiday today; is the office really open?
The speaker expects the office to be closed.
- This small bag can hold both laptops meh?
Can this small bag really hold both laptops?
The speaker doubts that the bag is large enough.
- You never try before meh?
Have you really never tried it before?
The speaker is surprised at the other person's lack of experience.
