Mah for Shared Reasons

Level 4

Mah often helps explain why a choice or claim makes sense.

How It Works

Giving a Recognizable Reason
Mah, also written ma, can follow a clause that justifies what the speaker has done or said. The information is offered as something the listener should take into account.

Context Supplies the Link
If someone asks why you came by bus, Taxi too expensive mah. gives the reason. Mah is not a verb or an ordinary translation of because; the relation to the previous turn makes the explanation clear.

It Can Sound Pointed
Presenting a reason as obvious may sound defensive if the listener disagrees. Mah and meh have different jobs: explaining a reason is not the same as questioning a surprising claim.

Examples (3)

  1. Taxi too expensive mah.

A taxi is too expensive; that is why.

This answers a friend who asks why the speaker took the bus.

  2. I bring umbrella because sky very dark mah.

I brought an umbrella because the sky is very dark, after all.

The sky is presented as a visible reason for the choice.

  3. She already told us ma.

She already told us, after all.

The speaker treats earlier information as the reason the group should know.
