Leaving a Known Thing Unsaid
An object can be unspoken when listeners know what is meant: I bought already. Make the object explicit when the shared context would otherwise leave more than one possible referent.
How It Works
An object can be left unspoken when the exchange identifies it. Talking about the tickets, I bought already can mean that I have bought those tickets. The verb does not acquire a new meaning simply because its object is understood.
Use this option only with recoverable reference. If the discussion includes both tickets and food, I bought already may need clarification. The object can be stated whenever that improves understanding. Do not assume every verb allows every missing complement, or add a guessed noun to a source sentence that intentionally leaves the reference open.
Examples (4)
- The tickets? I bought already.
I have bought the tickets.
- You saw the photo? Saw already.
I have seen the photo.
- Can bring the umbrella? I bring later.
I will bring the umbrella later.
- Don't throw away. I still need.
Do not throw that item away; I still need it, in a clear shared context.
