ah
Ah in Questions and Topic Attention
The position and delivery of ah help show what the speaker is doing.
How It Works
Checking an Understanding
After a proposition, ah can help ask whether the speaker has understood correctly. Listen to the question contour and the previous turn.
Calling Attention to a Topic
A speaker may pause after a topic with ah and then continue the comment: This printer ah, always jam. The printer is what the following comment concerns.
Keep the Uses Apart
Sentence-final and topic-following ah need not have the same effect. Ordinary spelling does not mark every difference in tone. Ah is also not compulsory in a question: the clause and delivery can already make the question clear.
