а камоли
Let Alone
Use а камоли (preceded by a mandatory comma) to mean 'let alone' or 'much less'. It introduces an outcome or item that is even more improbable or demanding than a baseline that was already rejected or barely achieved.
How It Works
The conjunction а камоли is the standard gradational connector in Serbian used to express 'let alone', 'much less', or in affirmative contexts 'even more so' (a fortiori).
1. Orthography, Synonyms, and Forms
• It is written as two separate words: the conjunction а followed by камоли (never а камо ли or акамоли).
• In standard Serbian, камоли can also appear without а (e.g., Није имао новца за хлеб, камоли за стан), although а камоли is by far the most frequent variant. Literary or older texts sometimes use the standard synonyms (а) некмоли or (а) некамоли.
• A comma is strictly required before the conjunction: ..., а камоли....
2. Scalar Polarity and Correlative Particles
• Negative Main Clause: Moves from the lower/easier benchmark to the higher/harder one. The initial clause almost always features the negative focus particle ни or чак ни (e.g., Не зна ни основне појмове, а камоли сложене теорије — 'He doesn't even know basic concepts, let alone complex theories').
• Affirmative Main Clause: Reverses the scale, moving from a demanding accomplishment to an easier one that holds true a fortiori. The main clause often features the particle и or чак и (e.g., Пази и на туђе ствари, а камоли на своје — 'She takes care even of other people's things, to say nothing of her own / even more so her own').
3. Syntactic Attachment and Clausal Types
Clauses introduced by а камоли belong to coordinate gradational clauses (независносложене градационе реченице):
• Phrasal Ellipsis: Parallel noun or prepositional phrases strictly preserve the case government or preposition required by the predicate (e.g., Не брине о забави, а камоли о послу — 'He doesn't even care about having fun, let alone about working').
• Verb Complements: Gradational verbal structures are not restricted to one rigid template. Depending on the governing context, they can take:
- да + present: Није хтео да се јави, а камоли да дође.
- Elliptical перфекат sharing the negated auxiliary: Није се ни јавио, а камоли дошао.
- The infinitive (especially after modal or impersonal predicates): Тешко је замислити, а камоли остварити.
4. Polarity Markers Within the Gradational Coordinate Clause
• In negative contexts, elliptical coordinated actions do not take a redundant negative particle (e.g., Није хтео да поздрави, а камоли да разговара).
• In affirmative or hypothetical a fortiori contexts, a finite verb can appear with overt assertion or polarity to clarify the affirmed outcome: Ја бих помогао и незнанцу, а камоли нећу најбољем другу ('I would help even a stranger, let alone refuse my best friend').
Examples (4)
- Није имао новца ни за основне намирнице, а камоли за нови аутомобил.
He didn't have money even for basic groceries, let alone for a new car.
Word by Word: Not he-had money nor for basic groceries, and let-alone for new car.
Notice that the prepositional phrase 'за нови аутомобил' preserves the governing preposition 'за' with the accusative case, mirroring 'за основне намирнице'.
- Нисам желео ни да га видим, а камоли да разговарам с њим.
I didn't even want to see him, let alone talk to him.
Word by Word: Not-I-am wanted nor to him I-see, and let-alone to I-talk with him.
Both parts coordinate verbal actions using the 'да + present' structure.
- Једва је претрчао један километар, а камоли цео полумаратон.
He could barely run one kilometer, let alone a whole half-marathon.
Word by Word: Barely he-is ran one kilometer, and let-alone whole half-marathon.
Here, 'а камоли' is triggered not by an overt negative particle, but by the restrictive word 'једва' (barely).
- Данас немам времена ни за ручак, а камоли за дуг састанак.
Today I don't even have time for lunch, let alone for a long meeting.
Word by Word: Today not-I-have time nor for lunch, and let-alone for long meeting.
The easier baseline ('ручак') is ruled out first, making the greater commitment ('дуг састанак') completely out of the question.
Common Mistakes
Inverting the scalar logic after a negative clause by putting the harder or more extreme task before 'а камоли'.
Није могао да истрчи маратон, а камоли један километар.Није могао да истрчи ни један километар, а камоли маратон.In negative contexts, the baseline (the easier or smaller element) must be stated first. The element introduced by 'а камоли' represents the harder or unthinkable extreme.
Dropping the preposition or correct case form after 'а камоли'.
Немам новца ни за храну, а камоли путовање.Немам новца ни за храну, а камоли за путовање.Elliptical coordination requires parallel case and preposition agreement. Because the verb/noun governs 'за + акузатив', you must retain 'за путовање'.
Adding an unnecessary negative particle to a parallel elliptical phrase after a negative clause.
Није хтео да се јави, а камоли да не дође.Није хтео да се јави, а камоли да дође.When continuing the negated action of the first clause, the clausal complement under 'а камоли' remains formally affirmative; adding 'не' would inadvertently reverse the intended meaning.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand 'а камоли' ('let alone' / 'much less'), learners need to be familiar with basic negation and adversative conjunctions ('a'), as the construction typically links an already stated negative limit or baseline to an even stronger claim.

Both constructions operate in negative environments, but 'ни ... ни' coordinates equal alternatives, whereas 'а камоли' creates an unequal, gradational scale.
