якобы
Reported but Unverified Claim
Use якобы when you want to distance yourself from a claim. It signals that you are reporting what someone else said, but you don't necessarily believe it or it hasn't been proven yet.
How It Works
The word якобы is an essential tool for nuanced communication in Russian. It allows the speaker to remain objective or express outright disbelief. While it shares similarities with words like будто and будто бы, it is strictly used for alleged facts, rumors, or pretense, and cannot be used for simple visual or poetic comparisons (unlike как будто).
Etymology: It comes from яко (archaic for 'как' / 'how' or 'as') + бы (the conditional particle 'would'). It literally translates to 'as if' or 'as it would be', which is a helpful mnemonic for its meaning and behavior.
1. Grammatical Roles:
- As a Particle: It is placed directly before the word or phrase it casts doubt upon. It frequently attaches to nouns, adverbs, and adjectives. For example: его якобы "успех" (his supposed 'success'), якобы случайно (supposedly by accident), or якобы больной (allegedly sick). In this role, it does not require commas. Important: якобы is a "fake introductory word" (лжевводное слово). Because it expresses doubt, learners frequently mistake it for words like кажется and incorrectly isolate it with commas. It must never be surrounded by commas when used as a particle.
- As a Conjunction or Modifier in Subordinate Clauses: It can replace что to introduce a subordinate clause (e.g., Он говорит, якобы он всё забыл - "He says that he supposedly forgot everything"). When used this way, a comma must be placed before якобы to separate the clauses, exactly as one would do with что. However, it very frequently appears alongside the conjunction что (e.g., Он сообщил, что якобы... - "He reported that allegedly..."). While что якобы is technically a pleonasm (grammatical redundancy) since якобы can already function as a conjunction, this combination is extremely common, widely accepted in modern Russian, and frequently found in journalism and literature. Crucial Punctuation Trap: When что and якобы are used together, unless required by an intervening phrase or a new subordinate clause (like 'если...'), never place a comma between 'что' and 'якобы' or isolate 'якобы' with commas.
2. Nuance and Tone:
While it can be used for neutral journalistic reporting (to avoid legal liability for unproven claims), in everyday speech, it often implies that the speaker thinks the information is an excuse or a lie. It is more formal than the colloquial мол or дескать. Furthermore, there is a core semantic difference: мол and дескать are primarily neutral markers of reported speech, whereas якобы inherently injects doubt or disbelief.
3. Morphology:
It is an invariable word. It never changes its form regardless of the case, gender, or number of the surrounding words.
4. Pronunciation:
The stress falls on the first syllable (я́кобы). Learners frequently mispronounce it as якобы́ due to the heavy -бы ending, but this is incorrect.
Examples (4)
- В газетах пишут, что референдум якобы отменили.
The newspapers write that the referendum was allegedly canceled.
Word by Word: In newspapers write, that referendum allegedly canceled.
This example shows the common combination of the conjunction 'что' with 'якобы' to report a claim while distancing the speaker from its truth.
- Он отказался прийти якобы из-за болезни.
He refused to come, allegedly due to illness.
Word by Word: He refused to come allegedly because of illness.
Here, 'якобы' acts as a particle casting doubt on the stated reason for his absence.
- Она утверждает, якобы ничего не знала об этом.
She claims she supposedly knew nothing about this.
Word by Word: She claims, supposedly nothing not knew about this.
In this sentence, 'якобы' functions as a conjunction introducing the subordinate clause, replacing 'что'.
- Они продают эти якобы старинные монеты туристам.
They sell these supposedly antique coins to tourists.
Word by Word: They sell these supposedly antique coins to tourists.
As a particle, 'якобы' is placed directly before the adjective 'старинные' to express disbelief in their authenticity.
Common Mistakes
Adding unnecessary commas around 'якобы' when it acts as a particle.
Он, якобы, забыл ключи дома.Он якобы забыл ключи дома.When 'якобы' is a particle modifying a specific word (like 'забыл'), it should not be set off by commas. Commas are only for separating clauses when it acts as a conjunction.
Placing a comma between 'что' and 'якобы'.
Он сказал, что, якобы, болел.Он сказал, что якобы болел.A very common trap for both learners and native speakers is treating 'якобы' as an introductory word and isolating it with commas. When it follows 'что', no comma should be placed between them or after 'якобы'.
Using «якобы» to report neutrally.
Different MeaningМоя мама сказала, якобы она меня любит.Моя мама сказала, что она меня любит.«Моя мама сказала, якобы она меня любит» is correct, but «якобы» shows that you doubt it. For a neutral report, use «что».
