za + Instrumental
Za with the Instrumental
The preposition za followed by the instrumental case is used for static location (behind), expressing support (for/pro), and with specific verbs like 'tęsknić' (to miss).
How It Works
The pattern za + instrumental is a versatile structure in Polish. Here are its primary uses:
- Location (Behind): It indicates that something is located behind an object. It answers the question 'where?' (location) rather than 'where to?' (destination). Movement is allowed as long as it happens within that location. For example, Kot jest za szafą (The cat is behind the wardrobe) or Biegam za domem (I am running behind the house). Note that when expressing destination or movement to a place behind something, you must use za with the accusative instead.
- Beyond / Outside of: It is used to describe being outside a certain boundary. Common examples include za miastem (outside the city) or za granicą (abroad).
- Following / Sequential: It expresses following someone or something in a sequence. For example, Idę za tobą (I am walking behind/following you) or rok za rokiem (year after year).
- Support and Advocacy: It expresses being 'for' or 'in favor of' something. Jestem za tym pomysłem (I am for this idea).
- Verbal Governance: Certain verbs require this combination:
- tęsknić za... (to miss/long for)
- przepadać za... (to be crazy about)
- gonić za... (to chase after)
- rozglądać się za... (to look around for)
- szaleć za... (to be crazy about)
To use this pattern, you must apply instrumental singular noun endings (usually -em for masculine/neuter and -ą for feminine) or instrumental plural noun endings (-ami, e.g., za drzewami). Keep in mind that masculine nouns ending in -a (like kolega) take the feminine -ą ending, and some common words have the irregular plural ending -mi (like ludźmi and dziećmi). Don't forget instrumental adjective endings: masculine/neuter singular adjectives end in -ym/-im, feminine singular adjectives end in -ą, and all plural adjectives end in -ymi/-imi.
Other Meanings Use Accusative: A future interval is za godzinę (in an hour), a price is za dolara (for a dollar), and thanks are dziękuję za pomoc (thank you for the help). These meanings do not use the instrumental even when no physical movement occurs. Learn the meaning and its case together.
Examples (5)
- Pies śpi za domem.
The dog is sleeping behind the house.
Word by Word: Dog sleeps behind house.
Here, 'za' indicates a static location behind the house, so 'dom' takes the instrumental ending '-em'.
- Bardzo tęsknię za moją rodziną.
I miss my family very much.
Word by Word: Very I-miss behind my family.
The verb 'tęsknić' always requires 'za' plus the instrumental case.
- Czy jesteś za nową ustawą?
Are you in favor of the new law?
Word by Word: Whether you-are for new law?
In this context, 'za' expresses support or being 'pro' something.
- Oni przepadają za polskim jedzeniem.
They are crazy about Polish food.
Word by Word: They fall-for behind Polish food.
The idiom 'przepadać za' (to love/be crazy about) uses the instrumental case.
- Samochód stoi za rogiem.
The car is parked around the corner.
Word by Word: Car stands behind corner.
Za rogiem is the usual expression for around the corner, with instrumental rogiem.
Common Mistakes
Using instrumental for motion (destination).
Idę za domem.Idę za dom.For the destination behind the house, use za dom. Idę za domem is also grammatical, but locates the walking behind the house rather than naming its destination.
Using instrumental for prices.
Kupiłem to za dolarem.Kupiłem to za dolara.Even though English uses 'for' for prices, Polish requires the accusative case for exchange or cost, never the instrumental.
Confusing feminine endings -ą and -ę.
Czekam za szafę.Czekam za szafą.Czekam za szafą locates the waiting behind the wardrobe, so szafą is instrumental. The accusative szafę would not express this location.
