przed + Instrumental

Przed with the Instrumental

Level 2

Przed + Instrumental = 'In front of' (location) or 'Before' (time).

How It Works

The preposition przed is a versatile tool in Polish for space, time, and protection.

1. Spatial Usage (Location)
When you want to say something is 'in front of' a building or object, use przed followed by the instrumental case. This describes a static position. Note that przed does not mean 'outside' in a general sense (which is na zewnątrz); it specifically denotes the front-facing side.
Example: Samochód stoi przed domem (The car is in front of the house).

2. Temporal Usage (Time)
To say 'before' a certain time or event, przed is the standard choice. It also functions like the English 'ago' when used with time units.
Example: Przed kolacją (Before dinner); Przed chwilą (A moment ago).

3. Protection and Warning
Polish uses przed + instrumental with verbs like chronić (to protect), ostrzegać (to warn), or uciekać (to run away). It functions like the English 'from' or 'against'.
Example: Ostrzegam cię przed nim (I am warning you against him).

4. The 'Przede' Variant
To avoid difficult consonant clusters, przed becomes przede. This is a phonological rule that occurs:

  • Always before the pronoun mną (me): przede mną.
  • Before words starting with complex clusters like wsz-, wsp-, or wst- (e.g., przede wszystkim - above all).

5. Static vs. Motion
Crucially, przed only takes the instrumental for static locations. If you are moving something to the front of an object, you must use the accusative case instead.

6. Distinction from 'Zanim'
Unlike English 'before', which can start a clause with a verb, przed is only a preposition for nouns. To follow 'before' with a verb phrase, use the conjunction zanim.

Examples (6)

  1. Czekam na ciebie przed kinem.

I am waiting for you in front of the cinema.

Word by Word: I-wait for you before cinema.

Here, 'przed' indicates a static location, so 'kino' changes to the instrumental 'kinem'.

  2. Musimy porozmawiać przed lekcją.

We must talk before the lesson.

Word by Word: We-must talk before lesson.

In a temporal sense, 'lekcja' becomes 'lekcją' in the instrumental case.

  3. Krem chroni skórę przed słońcem.

The cream protects the skin from the sun.

Word by Word: Cream protects skin before sun.

Verbs of protection like 'chronić' use 'przed' followed by the instrumental case.

  4. On stoi dokładnie przede mną.

He is standing exactly in front of me.

Word by Word: He stands exactly before me.

Notice the use of 'przede' instead of 'przed' because it is followed by the pronoun 'mną'.

  5. Kupiłem to przed tygodniem.

I bought this a week ago.

Word by Word: I-bought this before week.

'Przed' + instrumental is a common way to express 'ago' with units of time.

  6. Przede wszystkim musisz odpocząć.

    Above all, you must rest.

Word by Word: Before all you-must rest.

'Przede wszystkim' is a very common fixed expression meaning 'primarily' or 'above all'.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'przed' to mean 'outside' in a general sense.

    Dzieci bawią się przed.
    Dzieci bawią się na zewnątrz.

'Przed' specifically means 'in front of' a specific object. To say 'outside' (not indoors), use the phrase 'na zewnątrz'.

  • Using the instrumental case for movement toward the front.

    Postaw krzesło przed stołem.
    Postaw krzesło przed stół.

While 'przed' + instrumental describes a static location, movement toward the front of something requires the accusative case.

  • Forgetting the 'e' in 'przede mną'.

    On jest przed mną.
    On jest przede mną.

The form 'przede' is mandatory before the pronoun 'mną' to make the phrase easier to pronounce.
