poza + Instrumental
Poza with the Instrumental
The preposition poza is used with the instrumental case to indicate a static location outside a limit (e.g., outside the city) or to mean 'besides/except for' in abstract contexts.
How It Works
The preposition poza functions in two primary ways when paired with the instrumental case:
1. Static Location
It describes being 'outside' or 'beyond' a specific perimeter. It is used for static positions (where you are). If you are describing motion to a place outside a boundary, Polish uses poza + accusative instead.
- Mieszkam poza miastem. (I live outside the city limits.)
2. Abstract Inclusion/Exclusion
It is frequently used to mean 'besides,' 'aside from,' or 'except for.' In this sense, it is often interchangeable with oprócz (though oprócz takes the genitive).
- Nie mam nic poza tym. (I have nothing besides this.)
Morphology Note:
Because poza ends in a vowel, it never changes its form. You must ensure the following noun uses instrumental singular endings (-em for masculine/neuter, -ą for feminine) or instrumental plural endings (-ami for all genders).
Examples (5)
- Pies biega poza domem.
The dog is running outside the house.
Word by Word: Dog runs outside house(instrumental).
Here, 'poza' indicates the dog's location is beyond the perimeter of the house.
- Poza nauką nie mam innych planów.
Apart from studying, I have no other plans.
Word by Word: Besides studying(instrumental) not I-have other plans.
This uses the abstract meaning of 'poza' to exclude other activities.
- Poza tym, musimy kupić chleb.
Besides that, we need to buy bread.
Word by Word: Outside that(instrumental), we-must buy bread.
'Poza tym' is a very common fixed expression used as a transition meaning 'furthermore' or 'besides.'
- Jesteśmy już poza granicami kraju.
We are already beyond the borders of the country.
Word by Word: We-are already outside borders(instrumental plural) country(genitive).
This example shows the instrumental plural ending -ami used with 'poza'.
- Nikt poza mną nie zna prawdy.
No one besides me knows the truth.
Word by Word: No-one outside me(instrumental) not knows truth.
When used with pronouns, 'poza' still requires the instrumental form (mną).
Common Mistakes
Using the Genitive case instead of the Instrumental.
Poza miasta.Poza miastem.Learners often confuse 'poza' with 'oprócz' (which takes the genitive). Remember: Poza + Instrumental.
Using the Instrumental for motion toward a place.
Different MeaningIdę poza domem.Idę poza dom.If you are moving from inside to outside (crossing the boundary), you must use poza + accusative. The instrumental is only for staying outside.
