poza + Accusative

Poza with the Accusative

Level 4

While 'poza' usually takes the instrumental to show location (outside), it switches to the accusative to show directional movement crossing a boundary or exceeding a limit.

How It Works

In Polish, several prepositions change their case depending on whether they describe a static location or a direction of movement. Poza is one of these 'two-case' prepositions.

1. Physical Movement: When a verb indicates motion that crosses a boundary (like a fence, a city limit, or a playing field), use the accusative. For example, 'wybiec poza linię' (to run beyond the line).

2. Abstract Limits: This pattern is very common in professional and academic Polish to describe exceeding a scope, a budget, or a conceptual framework. A famous idiom is 'wyjść poza nawias' (to go beyond the brackets/norm).

3. Case Forms:

  • Feminine: Nouns end in -ę (e.g., poza rzekę).
  • Masculine Inanimate/Neuter: Usually identical to the nominative (e.g., poza miasto).
  • Masculine Animate: Nouns end in -a (e.g., poza rywala).

Examples (4)

  1. Piłka wyleciała poza boisko.

The ball flew out beyond the pitch.

Word by Word: Ball flew-out beyond pitch.

Here, 'boisko' is in the accusative because the ball crossed the boundary of the field.

  2. Musimy wyjść poza schemat.

We must go beyond the pattern (think outside the box).

Word by Word: We-must to-go-out beyond pattern.

A figurative use where 'schemat' (pattern/template) is the limit being crossed.

  3. Wyjechaliśmy na spacer poza miasto.

We went for a walk out beyond the city.

Word by Word: We-traveled on walk beyond city.

The movement is directed from the city to the area outside its limits.

  4. To wykracza poza moje kompetencje.

    This goes beyond my competencies.

Word by Word: This steps-out beyond my competencies.

Used to describe exceeding the scope of one's authority or skills.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the instrumental case for directional movement.

    Wyjść poza miastem.
    Wyjść poza miasto.

'Miastem' is instrumental, which implies you are already outside and walking there. To express 'going outside' (crossing the border), you must use the accusative 'miasto'.
