Ordinal Numbers

Level 2

Ordinal numbers (liczebniki porządkowe) describe the order or rank of something (e.g., 1st, 2nd). In Polish, they behave exactly like adjectives, meaning they change their endings to match the noun they describe.

How It Works

1. Adjectival Nature
Ordinal numbers are grammatically adjectives. This means they must match the noun's gender, number, and case. Most follow the hard-stem adjective pattern (like pierwszy, czwarty). However, drugi (2nd) is a velar-stem adjective, and trzeci (3rd) follows the soft-stem pattern.

2. Masculine-Personal Plural
When referring to groups of men or mixed-gender groups, ordinals use the masculine-personal plural form. For example, pierwszy becomes pierwsi and drugi becomes drudzy (e.g., Oni byli pierwsi - They were first).

3. Compound Ordinals (21-99)
For numbers between 21 and 99, both parts of the number become ordinals and both must decline. For example, '21st' is dwudziesty pierwszy. If you change the case, both words change: o dwudziestym pierwszym (Locative).

4. Large Numbers (100+)
For compound numbers 100 and above, only the tens and units (the last two components) are ordinals, while hundreds and thousands remain cardinal. For example, '121st' is sto dwudziesty pierwszy.

5. Key Usage Contexts

  • Dates: The day is an ordinal number. To say 'on' a certain date, use the bare genitive case without any preposition. Spotkamy się pierwszego maja (We will meet on May 1st). Do not use 'w' or 'na'.
  • Hours: Polish uses ordinals for the hour. Jest godzina piąta (It is five o'clock, lit. 'the fifth hour').
  • Floors: Mieszkam na pierwszym piętrze (I live on the first floor).

Examples (5)

  1. To jest moja pierwsza wizyta w Polsce.

This is my first visit to Poland.

Word by Word: This is my first visit in Poland.

'Pierwsza' is the feminine nominative form to match the feminine noun 'wizyta'.

  2. Mieszkam na trzecim piętrze.

I live on the third floor.

Word by Word: I live on third floor.

'Trzecim' is the locative form matching the neuter noun 'piętrze' (from 'piętro').

  3. Spotkamy się dwudziestego drugiego lipca.

We will meet on July 22nd.

Word by Word: We will meet twenty-second of July.

In dates, both parts of the compound ordinal (22nd) decline into the genitive case.

  4. To jest jego drugi samochód.

    This is his second car.

Word by Word: This is his second car.

'Drugi' (2nd) matches the masculine nominative noun 'samochód'.

  5. Piję już czwartą kawę.

I am already drinking my fourth coffee.

Word by Word: I drink already fourth coffee.

'Czwartą' is the feminine accusative form matching 'kawę'.

Common Mistakes

  • Using cardinal numbers instead of ordinals for dates.

    Dzisiaj jest jeden maja.
    Dzisiaj jest pierwszy maja.

In Polish, dates always require ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd) rather than cardinal numbers (1, 2).

  • Declining only the last part of a compound ordinal (21-99).

    Mieszkam w dwadzieścia pierwszym domu.
    Mieszkam w dwudziestym pierwszym domu.

For numbers 21-99, both the tens and the units must be ordinals and must decline to match the noun.

  • Applying the 'Genitive Plural' rule to ordinals.

    Widzę piąty kotów.
    Widzę piątego kota.

While cardinal numbers 5+ trigger the genitive plural, ordinal numbers are adjectives and simply agree with the noun in its natural case.
