jeden

Jeden Agreement

Level 2

Unlike higher numbers, jeden acts like an adjective. It changes its form to match the noun's gender (jeden, jedna, jedno) and case (nominative, accusative, etc.).

How It Works

The numeral jeden is grammatically an adjective. This means it must agree with the noun it modifies in three ways:

  • Gender: jeden (masculine), jedna (feminine), jedno (neuter).
  • Case: It declines through all seven cases just like a standard adjective.
  • Number: While usually singular, it has plural forms (jedni, jedne) for plural-only nouns or to mean 'some'.

Verb Agreement:
Unlike numerals 5 and above, which often trigger a singular neuter verb, jeden follows standard subject-verb agreement. The verb simply matches the singular noun: Jeden chłopiec biegnie (One boy is running).

Indefinite Usage:
Polish has no articles, so you don't need jeden to say 'a car' (mam samochód). Use jeden only when emphasizing the quantity 'one' or introducing a specific 'certain' person/thing.

Compound Numbers:
In numbers like 21 (dwadzieścia jeden) or 31, the word jeden remains indeclinable (it stays in its base form) and the noun follows the case rules of the tens, not the 'one'.

Examples (5)

  1. Mam jeden samochód.

    I have one car.

Word by Word: I have one car.

Here, 'jeden' is masculine accusative to match 'samochód'. It emphasizes that I have exactly one.

  2. Poproszę jedną kawę.

    I'd like one coffee, please.

Word by Word: I will-ask-for one coffee.

'Jedną' is the feminine accusative form, matching 'kawę'.

  3. Znam jednego lekarza.

    I know a (certain) doctor.

Word by Word: I know one doctor.

Using 'jednego' (masculine animate accusative) introduces a specific doctor the speaker has in mind.

  4. W pokoju są jedne drzwi.

There is one door in the room.

Word by Word: In room are one doors.

Because 'drzwi' is a plural-only noun, we must use the plural form 'jedne'.

  5. Raz, dwa, trzy!

    One, two, three!

Word by Word: Once, two, three!

When counting out loud (without a noun), we use 'raz' instead of 'jeden'.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'jeden' like the English 'a'.

    Different MeaningMam jednego psa.
    Mam psa.

'Mam jednego psa' is correct, but it stresses the number: one dog, not two. To say you have a dog, simply say 'Mam psa.'

  • Failing to change the gender of 'jeden'.

    jeden kobieta
    jedna kobieta

'Jeden' must match the feminine gender of 'kobieta'.

  • Using the nominative plural after 'jeden z'.

Jeden z moich koledzy mieszka w Krakowie.
Jeden z moich kolegów mieszka w Krakowie.

After 'jeden z' (one of), the group goes in the genitive plural: 'z moich kolegów'. The nominative 'koledzy' is used only for the subject.
