Między with the Instrumental

Level 3

The preposition między (or pomiędzy) means 'between' or 'among'. When describing where something is located (static position), it always requires the instrumental case.

How It Works

The preposition między is a versatile tool in Polish for describing relationships in space and time.

1. Case Government: Location vs. Motion
The case you use depends on whether you are describing a static position or a movement toward a destination:

  • Location (Gdzie?): Use the instrumental case. This is the most common usage. (e.g., Siedzę między bratem a siostrą.)
  • Motion (Dokąd?): Use the accusative case when something is moving into the space between objects. (e.g., Klucze wpadły między krzesła.)

2. Spatial vs. Temporal

  • Spatial: Mieszkam między parkiem a lasem. (I live between the park and the forest.)
  • Temporal: Spotkanie jest między drugą a trzecią. (The meeting is between two and three.)

3. Irregularities and Pronouns
When using the instrumental case, be aware of high-frequency irregular forms like ludźmi (among people). Additionally, personal pronouns must also change their form (e.g., między nami - between us).

4. 'Between' vs. 'Among'
In Polish, między is used even for large groups if you are thinking of the members as individuals. If you want to describe being 'in the midst of' a collective mass, you might use wśród (+ Genitive) instead.

5. Między vs. Pomiędzy
These two are functionally identical. Pomiędzy is slightly more formal or emphatic, but you can use them interchangeably in almost every situation.

Examples (5)

  1. Pies śpi między fotelem a kanapą.

The dog is sleeping between the armchair and the sofa.

Word by Word: Dog sleeps between armchair and sofa.

Both 'fotelem' and 'kanapą' are in the instrumental case, joined by 'a'.

  2. To zostanie między nami.

    This will stay between us.

Word by Word: This will-stay between us.

Uses the first-person plural pronoun in the instrumental case (nami).

  3. Mamy przerwę między lekcjami.

We have a break between classes.

Word by Word: We-have break between classes.

Here, 'lekcjami' is the instrumental plural form.

  4. Restauracja znajduje się między bankiem a apteką.

The restaurant is located between the bank and the pharmacy.

Word by Word: Restaurant finds itself between bank and pharmacy.

A classic spatial example using two nouns in the instrumental singular.

  5. Pomiędzy drzewami stoi mały dom.

Between the trees stands a small house.

Word by Word: Between trees stands small house.

Uses the variant 'pomiędzy' with the plural instrumental 'drzewami'.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Nominative case after 'między'.

    Siedzę między brat a siostra.
    Siedzę między bratem a siostrą.

Nouns following 'między' must be declined into the instrumental case. 'Brat' becomes 'bratem' and 'siostra' becomes 'siostrą'.

  • Forgetting to decline the second noun after 'a'.

    Mieszkam między kinem a teatr.
    Mieszkam między kinem a teatrem.

When listing two items, the preposition governs both. Both 'kino' and 'teatr' must be in the instrumental case.

  • Confusing 'między' with 'wśród'.

    Jestem między tłumu.
    Jestem wśród tłumu.

Use 'wśród' (+ Genitive) for being in the middle of a collective mass like a crowd (tłum). Use 'między' for distinct, separable entities.
