dwa / dwie
Dwa and Dwie
In Polish, the number 'two' changes based on the gender of the noun. Use dwa for masculine things/animals and neuter nouns. Use dwie for feminine nouns.
How It Works
The numerals dwa and dwie are used in the nominative case (subjects) and accusative case (objects) for non-masculine-personal nouns. Unlike higher numbers, they usually take a plural verb.
1. Dwa (Masculine & Neuter)
Use dwa when counting:
- Masculine inanimate nouns: dwa stoły (two tables).
- Masculine animate nouns (animals): dwa psy (two dogs).
- Most neuter nouns: dwa okna (two windows). Note: The word 'dzieci' (children) strictly requires collective numerals (dwoje). For young animals ending in -ę (like kurczę), prescriptive grammar suggests 'dwoje', but in modern Polish, 'dwa' is widely accepted (dwa kurczęta), or speakers use the masculine animate form (dwa kurczaki).
2. Dwie (Feminine)
Use dwie exclusively for feminine nouns:
- dwie kobiety (two women).
- dwie książki (two books).
3. Masculine Personal (Men)
When referring to men, you cannot use 'dwa'. You must use:
- Dwaj + nominative plural: Dwaj koledzy są tutaj (Two colleagues are here). This takes a plural verb.
- Dwóch + genitive plural: Dwóch kolegów jest tutaj (or as an accusative object: Widzę dwóch kolegów). This takes a 3rd-person singular verb (which takes the neuter form in the past tense) when used as a subject.
4. Special Cases & Compound Numbers
- Mixed Groups & Plural-only Nouns: For mixed-gender groups (a man and a woman) or plural-only nouns (like drzwi - door), use collective numerals (dwoje).
- Body Parts: The words 'oczy' (eyes) and 'uszy' (ears) take 'dwoje' (dwoje oczu, dwoje uszu). However, other paired body parts use standard numerals based on their gender (e.g., dwie ręce - two hands, dwa kolana - two knees).
- Compound Numbers: Compound numbers ending in 2 (like 22, 32, 102) follow the exact same rules as the number 2 itself, taking the nominative plural and a plural verb (e.g., dwadzieścia dwa psy).
- The Exception of 12: The number 12 (dwanaście) does not behave like 2. It behaves like numbers 5 and above, taking the genitive plural and a singular neuter verb.
- Agreement: For non-masculine-personal nouns, dwa and dwie use the nominative or accusative plural form of the noun.
5. Declension in Other Cases
Note that these numerals decline and change form in other grammatical cases (e.g., in the instrumental case: z dwoma psami, z dwiema kobietami).

'Lampy' (lamps) is feminine, so we use 'dwie'.
- Kupuję dwa jabłka.

'Jabłka' (apples) is neuter, so we use 'dwa'.
- Dwie siostry czytają książkę.

'Siostry' (sisters) is feminine, so we use 'dwie'.
- Widzę dwa duże domy.

Common Mistakes
Using 'dwa' for feminine nouns.
dwa kawydwie kawyCoffee (kawa) is feminine, so it must take the feminine numeral 'dwie'.
Using 'dwa' for male humans in the nominative.
dwa lekarzedwaj lekarzeFor male people, use 'dwaj' or 'dwóch'. 'Dwa' is for inanimate objects, animals and neuter nouns. A mixed pair of a man and a woman uses the collective 'dwoje'.
Using the genitive case after 'dwa' or 'dwie'.
dwa okiendwa oknaNumbers 2, 3, and 4 require the nominative plural, not the genitive plural (which is used for 5+).
