No Grammatical Gender
Persian does not sort nouns into masculine and feminine grammar classes. An adjective does not change to match a person’s gender.
How It Works
No noun-gender classes. There is no masculine/feminine grammatical class that changes the ordinary adjective attached to a noun. دخترِ خوب and پسرِ خوب both keep خوب.
No he/she split in او. او معلم است. does not state the teacher’s gender. Translate with a known name, the person’s pronoun or “that person” when appropriate. Do not add biographical facts because English asks you to choose a pronoun.
Gender-neutral possessive form. کتابش can mean his book, her book or that person’s book. The clitic ـش names a third-person owner without marking that owner’s gender.
Vocabulary can still specify a relation such as خواهر, meaning sister, or برادر, meaning brother. Those meanings do not create grammatical gender agreement elsewhere in the sentence.
Examples (4)
- دخترِ خوب
the good girl
خوب does not acquire a feminine ending.
- پسرِ خوب
the good boy
The same adjective form appears with this noun.
- او معلم است.
That person is a teacher.
The sentence does not state the teacher’s gender.
- کتابش
that person’s book
ـش does not distinguish his from her.
