x' / xi / xiex
Asking What
x' and interrogative xi introduce what questions; għal xiex means “what for.”
How It Works
X' introduces many direct and embedded what clauses. Write its apostrophe next to the following form, as in x'ġara. Interrogative xi occurs before consonant clusters, including the initial cluster of trid. This supported environment does not provide an exhaustive spelling rule for every what question.
The fuller interrogative xiex occurs in established prepositional frames: għal xiex, “what for,” and minn xiex, “from what.” Learn these frames rather than freely substituting one form for another.
Indefinite xi means “some/any.” In xi ħaġa, it introduces “something/anything,” with the English interpretation depending on context. Compare the second example's request to identify an intended action with the fourth example's statement about an unspecified thing. The two uses share a spelling but perform different jobs.
