tidak ... tetapi ...

Not Doing X but Doing Y

Level 3

Use tidak ... tetapi ... to say 'not [A], yet [B]'. It connects a negative statement with a contrasting or surprising positive statement.

How It Works

The pattern tidak ... tetapi ... is used to express coordinate contrast ('Not A, yet B').

1. Coordinate Contrast ('Yet') vs. Replacement ('But Rather')
It is crucial to distinguish between two types of contrast in Malay:

  • Coordinate Contrast (tidak ... tetapi ...): Used when connecting a negative fact with a contrasting positive fact. Example: Kereta itu tidak mahal, tetapi sangat selesa. (The car is not expensive, yet it is very comfortable.)
  • Mutually Exclusive Replacement (bukan ... tetapi ...): Used when correcting a premise, meaning 'Not A, but rather B'. Example: Dia bukan tidur, tetapi sedang berfikir. (He is not sleeping, but rather thinking.)

2. The Role of 'Bukan' vs 'Tidak'
A common misconception is that tidak is always used for verbs and adjectives in contrastive frames. According to standard Malay grammar, bukan is the correct negator for mutually exclusive alternatives ('Not A, but rather B') across all parts of speech, including verbs and adjectives. You should only use tidak ... tetapi ... when you mean 'yet' or 'nevertheless'.

Note for learners: While Indonesian prescriptivists often prefer bukan ... melainkan ... for mutually exclusive replacement, standard Malaysian Malay officially uses bukan ... tetapi ....

Examples (4)

  1. Kereta itu tidak mahal, tetapi sangat selesa.

The car is not expensive, yet very comfortable.

Word by Word: Car that not expensive, but very comfortable.

This shows coordinate contrast: the car lacks the negative quality of being expensive, yet possesses the positive quality of being comfortable.

  2. Cuaca hari ini tidak panas, tetapi mendung.

The weather today is not hot, yet cloudy.

Word by Word: Weather day this not hot, but cloudy.

Contrasts two coexisting facts about the weather without one replacing the other as a correction.

  3. Dia tidak kaya, tetapi selalu bersedekah.

He is not rich, yet always gives to charity.

Word by Word: He not rich, but always give alms.

Connects a negative fact (not rich) with a surprising positive action (giving to charity).

  4. Ubat itu tidak pahit, tetapi berkesan.

The medicine is not bitter, yet effective.

Word by Word: Medicine that not bitter, but effective.

Shows that despite lacking the expected quality (bitterness), it still has the desired outcome (effectiveness).

Common Mistakes

  • Thinking only 'bukan' can be used in a 'not A but B' correction.

Different MeaningDia tidak menangis, tetapi tertawa.
    Dia bukan menangis, tetapi tertawa.

Both are correct. 'Tidak menangis, tetapi tertawa' simply negates the verb. Bukan corrects an idea ('it was not crying, it was laughing') and is a little stronger.

  • Using 'tidak' instead of 'bukan' to correct a colour.

Baju ini tidak merah, tetapi biru.
Baju ini bukan merah, tetapi biru.

Bukan is the usual way to correct something: 'bukan merah, tetapi biru'. 'Tidak merah' is possible, but it sounds like a plain denial rather than a correction.

To use 'tidak ... tetapi ...' confidently, you must first understand how to negate verbs and adjectives using 'tidak' and how to use the conjunction 'tetapi' to show contrast. This pattern specifically contrasts actions or qualities rather than nouns.
