Grouping with Ber-

Level 2

The prefix ber- attached to a number (like dua or tiga) indicates that the subjects are acting together as a collective unit. It translates to 'the two of us/them' or 'in a group of three'.

How It Works

This pattern is essential for describing how people or things move and act in groups. These are known as collective numerals (Kata Bilangan Himpunan).

1. Cardinal Numbers (Collective)
When attached to cardinal numbers, ber- indicates a group acting together. While 2–9 are most common, it applies to any number. These can function as predicates or describe the subject.

  • Kami berdua = The two of us (together).
  • Mereka bersepuluh = The ten of them (together).
  • Mereka bertiga = They are three (in a group).

2. The Case of 'One'
To express acting alone, Malay uses berseorangan. The form bersatu (from satu) is idiomatic and means 'to be united' or 'to unify'.

3. Large Indefinite Quantities
For units like puluh (ten), ribu (thousand), or juta (million), the root is reduplicated to show a massive, indefinite amount.

  • Berpuluh-puluh pelajar = Tens of students.
  • Beribu-ribu orang = Thousands of people.

4. The -an Suffix Variation
Adding the suffix -an (e.g., berduaan) often adds a nuance of exclusivity, privacy, or being 'just' that number (e.g., 'just the two of us').

5. Collective Nouns
It can also attach to nouns representing groups, such as kumpulan (group), to mean 'forming a group' or 'in teams'.

Examples (5)

  1. Kami berdua akan pergi ke pawagam.

The two of us will go to the cinema.

Word by Word: We two-together will go to cinema.

Here, 'berdua' emphasizes that the two people are going together as a pair.

  2. Kanak-kanak itu bermain bertiga di taman.

Those children are playing in a group of three at the park.

Word by Word: Children that play three-together at park.

Using 'bertiga' describes the state of the children playing as a trio.

  3. Beribu-ribu peminat menunggu di luar stadium.

Thousands of fans are waiting outside the stadium.

Word by Word: Thousands-of fans wait at outside stadium.

When 'ribu' is prefixed with 'ber-' and reduplicated, it means an indefinite large number ('thousands').

  4. Rakyat Malaysia mesti sentiasa bersatu.

    Malaysians must always be united.

Word by Word: People Malaysia must always be-united.

'Bersatu' is a special form meaning 'united' rather than a specific count.

  5. Pelajar-pelajar itu berbincang berkumpulan.

Those students are discussing in groups.

Word by Word: Students those discuss in-groups.

The prefix 'ber-' attached to 'kumpulan' (group) shows the manner in which they are discussing.

Common Mistakes

  • Placing 'berdua' before the noun like a standard quantifier.

    Berdua orang itu kawan saya.
Dua orang itu kawan saya. / Mereka berdua kawan saya.

'Berdua' describes a collective state; it cannot replace the simple cardinal number 'dua' when counting nouns directly.

  • Confusing 'berdua' (together as two) with 'kedua' (second/both).

    Saya anak berdua.
    Saya anak kedua.

'Kedua' is an ordinal number (second), whereas 'berdua' implies a collective group of two.

  • Omitting reduplication for large numbers.

    Beribu orang datang.
    Beribu-ribu orang datang.

In standard Malay, 'beribu' can mean 'having a mother' (ibu). To mean 'thousands', you must reduplicate the root: 'beribu-ribu'.
