छह With तोँ
Being with तोँ: छह
छह is the present of to be for तोँ, the close you.
How It Works
Maithili has three levels of "you". अहाँ is the everyday polite you. अपने is very formal. तोँ is the close, warm you for people you know well and who are not above you.
| Time | Positive | Negative |
|---|---|---|
| present | तोँ छह | तोँ नहि छह |
| past | तोँ छलह | तोँ नहि छलह |
Other verbs with तोँ also end in -ह: तोँ करबह (you will do), तोँ पढ़लह (you read). So छह is part of a whole set of तोँ endings.
The word छह also looks like the number six. Maithili writes six as छओ, so the two never mix. A rougher form in -एँ exists in some places, but do not use it.
