Почитуван (respected) opens a formal letter, and Со почит (with respect) closes it: Почитувана госпоѓо Николовска, ... Со почит, Ана Трајковска

How It Works

Opening. Choose the form that matches the reader:

  • Почитуван господине Петровски, to a man
  • Почитувана госпоѓо Николовска, to a woman
  • Почитувани дами и господа, to a group
  • Почитувани, to an office when you do not know the names

The titles господине and госпоѓо are the forms used for speaking to someone; see addressing someone and titles. To a friend, write Драг Марко, or Драга Ана, instead.

After the greeting. Put a comma after the greeting. When the letter starts on a new line, its first word begins with a capital letter: Почитуван господине Петровски, / Ви пишувам во врска со ... (I am writing to you about ...)

Capital В. When you write to one person, write Вие, Ве, Ви, Ваш, Вашата, Вашето with a capital: Ви благодарам за Вашето писмо. When you write to several people, use small letters: Ве молам becomes ве молам. See ти and Вие.

Closing. End with Со почит, and put your full name on the next line. Useful lines before it: Ве молам да ми одговорите до петок. (Please reply by Friday.) Однапред Ви благодарам. (Thank you in advance.)

    In a letter, the name goes on its own line under Со почит.

Common Mistakes

  • Not making почитуван agree with a woman's title.

    Почитуван госпоѓо Николовска,
    Почитувана госпоѓо Николовска,

    Почитуван is an adjective. Before госпоѓо it takes the feminine ending -а.

  • Writing the polite pronouns with a small letter to one reader.

    Однапред ви благодарам за вашата помош.
    Однапред Ви благодарам за Вашата помош.

    In a letter to one person, all forms of Вие and Ваш start with a capital В. Small letters are for letters to several people.
