Односно = that is, or rather: Ќе дојдам утре, односно во среда. (I will come tomorrow, that is, on Wednesday.) Имено = namely. Всушност = actually, in fact.

How It Works

Односно: that is, or rather.

  • Saying it another way: Ќе дојдам утре, односно во среда. (I will come tomorrow, that is, on Wednesday.) Живеам во центарот, односно близу до плоштадот. (I live in the center, that is, near the square.)
  • Correcting yourself: Ќе стигнам во пет, односно во пет и пол. (I will arrive at five, or rather at half past five.)

Compare или: утре или во среда offers two different days, but утре, односно во среда names the same day twice.

Имено: namely. It points to exactly what you mean: Ми треба само едно, имено тишина. (I need only one thing, namely quiet.)

Всушност: actually, in fact. It corrects an idea or says what is really true: Всушност, не сум од Скопје, туку од Битола. (Actually, I am not from Skopje but from Bitola.) Тестот всушност беше лесен. (The test was actually easy.) It does not mean "at the moment"; for that, say моментално or сега.

Commas. Односно and имено usually have a comma before them. Всушност at the start of a sentence is usually followed by a comma.

  1. Ќе дојдам утре, односно во среда.

    I will come tomorrow, that is, on Wednesday.

  2. Ќе стигнам во пет, односно во пет и пол.

    I will arrive at five, or rather at half past five.

    Word by Word: Will arrive-I at five, that-is at five and half.

    Here односно corrects the first time.

  3. Живеам во центарот, односно близу до плоштадот.

    I live in the center, that is, near the square.

    Word by Word: Live-I in center-the, that-is near to square-the.

  4. Ми треба само едно, имено тишина.

    I need only one thing, namely quiet.

    Word by Word: To-me needs only one, namely silence.

  5. Всушност, не сум од Скопје, туку од Битола.

    Actually, I am not from Skopje but from Bitola.

    Word by Word: Actually, not am-I from Skopje, but from Bitola.

  6. Тестот всушност беше лесен.

    The test was actually easy.

    Word by Word: Test-the actually was easy.

Common Mistakes

  • Using или instead of односно.

    Ќе дојдам утре или во среда. (meaning: I will come tomorrow, that is, on Wednesday.)
    Ќе дојдам утре, односно во среда.

    Или offers two different choices. Односно shows that утре and во среда are the same day.

  • Using всушност for "at the moment".

    Всушност живеам во Охрид. (meaning: At the moment I live in Ohrid.)
    Моментално живеам во Охрид.

    Всушност means "in fact", so the first sentence means "Actually, I live in Ohrid." It never means "currently", even though the English word "actually" looks like the word for "currently" in some languages. For "at the moment", use моментално or сега.
