In official texts, actions often become nouns: bei der Opstellung vum Budget (when drawing up the budget). In speech you would use a verb: wéi se de Budget opgestallt hunn.

How It Works

1. Verb or noun?
The same idea can be said in two ways:

  • With a verb: Si hunn d'Reegelen ausgeschafft. (They drew up the rules.)
  • With a noun: d'Ausschaffe vun de Reegelen (the drawing up of the rules)

2. Typical nouns
Nouns in -ung: Aféierung, Ëmsetzung, Opstellung, Erneierung. French nouns: Realisatioun, Annulatioun. Infinitives used as nouns: d'Ausschaffen.

3. Vun, not the genitive
The thing acted on is joined with vun and the dative: d'Ëmsetzung vun der Direktiv. Remember the n-rule inside these phrases: beim Ausschaffe vun ....

4. Where you meet it
Laws, official letters, news and reports. It is compact but heavy to listen to. When you speak or write a friendly message, turn the noun back into a verb.

    Ausschaffen loses its n before v.

  3. Bei der Opstellung vum Budget gouf e wichtege Poste vergiess.

    An important item was forgotten when the budget was drawn up.

  4. Wéi se de Budget opgestallt hunn, hu se e wichtege Poste vergiess.

    When they drew up the budget, they forgot an important item.

    The same idea with verbs, as people say it.

  5. Duerch d'Aféierung vum Computer huet d'Bürosaarbecht sech staark verännert.

    Office work changed a lot with the introduction of the computer.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a German-style genitive after the action noun.

    Fir d'Ëmsetzung der Direktiv hunn d'Länner fënnef Joer Zäit.
    Fir d'Ëmsetzung vun der Direktiv hunn d'Länner fënnef Joer Zäit.

    Luxembourgish joins the object of an action noun with vun and the dative.

  • Forgetting the n-rule on an infinitive used as a noun.

    Beim Ausschaffen vun der neier Verfassung ...
    Beim Ausschaffe vun der neier Verfassung ...

    A noun made from an infinitive ends in -en, so the n drops before most consonants, here before v.
