genuch

Enough: Genuch

Level 3

Genuch means enough. Put it before a noun: genuch Zäit. Put it after an adjective: grouss genuch.

How It Works

1. Before a noun
Put genuch right in front of the noun. It works with every gender and with plurals, and it never takes an ending:

  • genuch Zäit (enough time)
  • genuch Sue (enough money)
  • genuch fräi Plazen (enough free seats)

In a few set phrases genuch can also follow the noun, as in Plaz genuch (room enough), but before the noun is the usual place.

Do not add vun after genuch. French says assez de, but Luxembourgish just says genuch Sue. This is the same as other amount words; see vill, e bëssen and e puer.

2. After an adjective or adverb
Here genuch comes last:

  • Ass d'Zëmmer grouss genuch? (Is the room big enough?)
  • Du bass al genuch. (You are old enough.)
  • Et geet ni séier genuch. (It never goes fast enough.)
  • Ech hunn et dacks genuch gesot. (I have said it often enough.)

3. On its own
Genuch can also stand alone: Dat ass genuch. (That is enough.) Elo ass et genuch! (That's enough now!)

4. Enough to do something
Add a clause with fir ... ze: Ech hunn net genuch Sue bei mer, fir déi Schong ze kafen. See fir ... ze.

5. Too much
The opposite idea, too, is ze before the adjective: ze grouss (too big).

Examples (6)

  1. Mir hu genuch Zäit.

    We have enough time.

Genuch comes before the noun Zäit. Hunn becomes hu by the n-rule.

  2. Ass d'Zëmmer grouss genuch?

    Is the room big enough?

After an adjective, genuch comes last.

  3. Ech hunn net genuch Sue bei mer, fir déi Schong ze kafen.

I don't have enough money on me to buy those shoes.

  4. Et sinn nach genuch fräi Plazen do.

There are still enough free seats.

Genuch goes in front of the adjective and noun together.

  5. Du bass al genuch, fir dat selwer ze entscheeden.

You are old enough to decide that yourself.

  6. Elo ass et genuch!

    That's enough now!

Genuch can stand on its own.

Common Mistakes

  • Adding vun after genuch, like French assez de.

    Mir hu genuch vun Zäit.
    Mir hu genuch Zäit.

Genuch goes straight before the noun. No word for of is needed.

  • Putting genuch before an adjective.

    Ass d'Zëmmer genuch grouss?
    Ass d'Zëmmer grouss genuch?

With an adjective, genuch comes after it, as in English big enough.

  • Adding an ending to genuch.

    Mir hu genuchen Zäit.
    Mir hu genuch Zäit.

Genuch never changes. It stays the same before every noun.
