How It Works

1. How it is built
Start with wat, add the topic, and end with ugeet (from ugoen, to concern). The topic can be a noun or a pronoun:

  • Wat d'Aarbecht ugeet, ... (As for the work, ...)
  • Wat eis nei Mataarbechterin ugeet, ... (As for our new colleague, ...)

Wat is the subject of ugeet, so the verb is always ugeet, even with a plural topic: Wat d'erneierbar Energien ugeet, ...

2. Word order after it
A wat ... ugeet clause at the start fills the first place, just like any subordinate clause. The verb of the main clause comes right after the comma:

  • Wat d'Aarbecht ugeet, si mer bal fäerdeg.
  • Wat d'Kris am Osten ugeet, huet den Ausseministère sech nach net geäussert.

Sometimes do picks up the topic again: Wat seng Éierlechkeet ugeet, do hunn ech meng Bedenken. (As for his honesty, I have my doubts about that.) Compare Naming the Topic First.

3. At the end
The clause can also follow the main clause: Mir hunn ënnerschiddlech Usiichten, wat den Aarbechtsprozess ugeet. (We have different views on the working process.)

4. Wat ... betrëfft
Wat ... betrëfft means the same thing: Wat mech betrëfft, braucht Der Iech keng Suergen ze maachen. (As far as I am concerned, you need not worry.)

5. Other meanings of ugoen
The same verb shows up in Dat geet dech näischt un. (That is none of your business.) It also has unrelated meanings, as in De Concert geet um aacht Auer un (The concert starts at eight).

    The wat ... ugeet clause can also come at the end.

  6. Wat mech betrëfft, braucht Der Iech keng Suergen ze maachen.

    As far as I am concerned, you need not worry.

    Wat ... betrëfft means the same as wat ... ugeet.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting the subject before the verb after the wat ... ugeet clause.

    Wat d'Aarbecht ugeet, mir si bal fäerdeg.
    Wat d'Aarbecht ugeet, si mer bal fäerdeg.

    The wat ... ugeet clause fills the first place, so the main verb comes right after the comma.

  • Putting ugeet right after wat.

    Wat ugeet d'Aarbecht, si mer bal fäerdeg.
    Wat d'Aarbecht ugeet, si mer bal fäerdeg.

    It is a subordinate clause, so the verb ugeet goes to the end, after the topic.
