šioks toks
Some with Šioks Toks
šioks toks, šiokia tokia = some, a bit of: šiokia tokia pažanga (some progress)
How It Works
1. Both parts agree. Each part changes like toks and tokia:
- masculine: šioks toks, šiokio tokio, šiokiam tokiam, šiokį tokį, šiokiu tokiu, šiokiame tokiame
- feminine: šiokia tokia, šiokios tokios, šiokiai tokiai, šiokią tokią, šiokia tokia, šiokioje tokioje
- plural genitive: šiokių tokių
2. Some, but not much.
- Padarei šiokią tokią pažangą. (You have made some progress.)
- Mieste įvyko šiokių tokių pokyčių. (Some changes have taken place in the city.)
3. With the genitive of some. When the noun is in the partitive genitive, šioks toks goes into the genitive too: Turiu šiokių tokių klausimų. (I have a few questions.) Jis jau turi šiokios tokios patirties. (He already has some experience.)
4. Šioks toks or šiek tiek. Šiek tiek (a little) is an adverb and never changes, and the noun after it goes in the genitive: šiek tiek pažangos. Šioks toks matches its noun instead: šiokia tokia pažanga. The meaning is about the same.
5. Some kind of. Šioks toks can also mean a kind of or of sorts: Tai šioks toks sprendimas. (That is a solution of sorts.)
