todėl
So and That Is Why with Todėl
Todėl means so or that is why. First say the cause, then the result with todėl: Lijo, todėl likome namie (It was raining, so we stayed at home).
How It Works
1. Cause, then result.
- Lijo, todėl likome namie. (It was raining, so we stayed at home.)
- Buvau pavargęs, todėl anksti atsiguliau. (I was tired, so I went to bed early.)
2. Todėl or nes? They describe the same link from opposite ends:
- Likome namie, nes lijo. – nes + cause.
- Lijo, todėl likome namie. – todėl + result.
3. Starting a sentence. Todėl can begin a new sentence: Autobusas vėlavo. Todėl ir aš pavėlavau (The bus was late. That is why I was late too). The word ir after todėl adds too or that is exactly why.
4. Todėl, kad: because. Todėl can point forward to a reason given with kad: Mokausi lietuvių kalbos todėl, kad mano senelė lietuvė (I am learning Lithuanian because my grandmother is Lithuanian).
5. Todėl versus kodėl. Kodėl asks why?. Todėl answers it: Kodėl neatėjai? – Sirgau, todėl neatėjau.
6. Similar words. Dėl to means because of that (see dėl), and taigi means so, therefore when drawing a conclusion.
