taigi / vadinasi
So and Consequently
Taigi and vadinasi introduce a conclusion: Jis neatėjo, vadinasi, serga. Taigi can also sum up or move on: Taigi pradėkime.
How It Works
1. Vadinasi: that means. Use it to reason from a sign to a conclusion. It is an inserted word, so commas go on both sides:
- Šviesa dega, vadinasi, kažkas yra namie.
- Vadinasi, jie neatvyko? (So they didn’t come?)
The same word is also the ordinary verb is called: Kaip vadinasi šis kaimas? (What is this village called?). Then it takes no commas.
2. Taigi: so, thus. It draws a conclusion, sums up what was said, or moves a talk on:
- Visi susirinko, taigi galime pradėti. (Everyone is here, so we can start.)
- Taigi pradėkime. (So, let’s begin.)
Usually no comma follows taigi. You may add one if you want a pause: Taigi, ką nusprendėme?
3. Words not to use. Careful Lithuanian does not use reiškia as an inserted word for vadinasi, and it does not use tokiu būdu (in this way) to mean so. Say vadinasi or taigi instead.
4. Todėl is different. todėl gives a result caused by the first fact: Lijo, todėl likome namie. Vadinasi gives what you conclude from a fact: Gatvės šlapios, vadinasi, lijo.
