Present -i

Present Verbs in -i

Level 1

turėti (have): turiu, turi, turi, turime, turite, turi

How It Works

The endings. Take the third-person form in -i:

  • aš turiu · tu turi · jis, ji turi
  • mes turime · jūs turite · jie, jos turi

The tu-form and the third-person form are spelled the same, turi, so the pronoun or context tells them apart.

Common verbs. turėti – turi (have), norėti – nori (want), galėti – gali (can), tikėti – tiki (believe), mylėti – myli (love), girdėti – girdi (hear), sėdėti – sėdi (sit).

A consonant change in the I-form. Before -iu, d turns into dž and t into č: girdi → girdžiu (I hear), sėdi → sėdžiu (I sit), kenti → kenčiu (I suffer).

Not every -ėti verb is here. Kalbėti and mokėti go to the -a group (kalba, moka), and so do verbs with -ėja in the present. Check the third-person form. See present verbs in -a.

Three verbs from this group, norėti, galėti and turėti, are used all the time. See having with turėti and want, can and know how.

Examples (6)

  1. Turiu klausimą.

    I have a question.

  2. Ar tu nori kavos?

    Do you want some coffee?

Nori is both the tu-form and the third-person form.

  3. Myliu tave.

    I love you.

  4. Mes galime ateiti rytoj.

    We can come tomorrow.

  5. Girdžiu muziką.

    I hear music.

Girdi → girdžiu: d becomes dž before -iu.

  6. Ar jūs mane girdite?

    Can you hear me?

Common Mistakes

  • Using the third-person form for "I".

    Aš turi klausimą.
    Aš turiu klausimą.

Turi is the tu or he/she form. With aš, the ending is -iu: turiu.

  • Forgetting the d to dž change.

    Aš girdiu muziką.
    Aš girdžiu muziką.

Before -iu, d becomes dž, so girdi gives girdžiu.

  • Using -a group endings for we.

    Mes turame laiko.
    Mes turime laiko.

In the -i group, the we-ending is -ime: turime.
