Prefixes Paired With Prepositions
įeiti į + acc. · išeiti iš + gen. · prieiti prie + gen. · nulipti nuo + gen. · praeiti pro + acc.
How It Works
1. The main pairs.
- į- + į + accusative: Įėjau į kambarį. (I went into the room.)
- iš- + iš + genitive: Išėjau iš namų. (I left the house.)
- pri- + prie + genitive: Priėjau prie lango. (I went up to the window.)
- nu- + nuo + genitive: Nulipau nuo kėdės. (I climbed down from the chair.)
- per- + per + accusative: Perėjome per tiltą. (We crossed the bridge.)
- pra- + pro + accusative: Pravažiavome pro bažnyčią. (We drove past the church.)
- už- + už + genitive: Katė užlindo už spintos. (The cat crawled behind the wardrobe.)
2. Spelling. The prefix and the preposition do not always look the same: pri- but prie, pra- but pro.
3. Other prefixes. A prefix does not require a matching preposition. At- and nu- often go with į or pas for the goal: Atvažiavau į Vilnių. Nuėjau pas draugą. Par- goes with namo: Parėjau namo.
4. Getting in and out of vehicles. Use įlipti į and išlipti iš: Įlipau į autobusą. Išlipau iš autobuso.
5. A direct object instead. A few verbs, such as pereiti (to cross) and apeiti (to go around), can also take a direct object without a preposition: Perėjome gatvę. (We crossed the street.)

Common Mistakes
Leaving out the preposition.
Įėjau kambarį.Įėjau į kambarį.Įeiti needs į before the place, even though the verb already has į- at the front.
Using the wrong case after the preposition.
Išėjau iš namus.Išėjau iš namų.The preposition decides the case. Iš always takes the genitive: namų.
Using nuo for getting out of a vehicle.
Išlipau nuo autobuso.Išlipau iš autobuso. For getting out of the inside of a bus, use Išlipau iš autobuso. Nuo describes moving off its surface, which is a different situation.
